Ok so im at this point in my transition where starting to get gendered correctly about 50% of the time even in male mode now. So have been thinking that what if I try to pay with a credit card and they want to check my id and don't believe its me.
SO the thought of getting a second credit card in my preferred name now has been occurring to me but I start to wonder if again they want to check my id and that doesn't match .

What are your thoughts on this? Have you done this and how did it go during this in between phase of your transition?

I had thought about getting some with just my initials and last name.  They'd still match the ID if needed and not out you if not.

Perhaps it is time to seriously start thinking about legally changing your name.  It would make everything easier.

If you're ready to come out, that is.  I changed my name before I even began HRT, so for me it was a non-issue.

Either way, good luck!

I had this problem at Costco.  I was asked whether my husband is with me.  This was the indicator for me to go ahead with the legal change, now my appearance and my cards match again!

I already came out to everyone in the family and most everyone in my personal life, but since I own a small construction company its a hard field to transition in. It has not stopped me going forward but not sure how to proceed at this point professionally. Been thinking just let it happen organically new clients will see how I am now and will be, the clients I have had for 35 years are the issue that is my main fear. They are my income and afraid to lose it. So my thoughts lately have been just go ahead and change name and gender marker on all legal documents and swallow it when my old name is used so business continues. It is a much better than not transitioning and at some point I  figure it will just happen naturally in the professional world.

Hi Quinn,

I have 4 credit cards. I changed 2 over to my then preferred name. I had a letter from my therapist just in case. I was never asked. I llegally changed my name then the other two cards.

If someone did not accept a CC I planned to just take out the other CC in my then legal name.

My bank account was a real PIA to change. Other than that it was just show my decree ( give them a copy, stamped so get extra) and fill out the form.

My W Fargo CC was changed via verbal request.

This stinks, when you start out with a new name you have 0 credit until it is established. I guess there is a way to link the two names but the peeps at the credit reporting agencies are less than helpful.

Are you sure about this?  As far as I now your credit rating is linked to your social security number, and that does not change.  There may be some initial confusion with the different name, but that should be corrected easily by providing the court order.
I think there are a lot of urban legends on this out there.
As can be seen here, not even changing the last name will do anything to your credit rating

I never thought about the credit reporting, but im pretty sure Linde is correct. It does have a place in the credit agencies use that has previous names.  I will look into this and really hope that I will not lose my credit rating

I tried to get an additional card at Sam's club. I paid the $10 not knowing that they needed to see a license to give me the card.
