Seeing my dad after I got back from work, I have been dealing with his Alzheimer's very well knowing he has been living a long happy life and I still have to tell him who I am at times. Finding out my oldest brother is doing well with his quitting his bad habit, smoking and has noticed he is saving money doing it. I am his encouragement with him doing this.

So on the back of several comments that I can't seem to find anymore, I bought, and read "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

And I am officially a fan. I can see how it influenced people like Terry Pratchett and Tom Holt. The sheer word magic is something else. And I can see why any sort of visual media doesn't do justice to what the book can do. You can't create a better image than what the reader can create in their own head. And some of the linguistic quirks are just magical. Sorry it took me this long, Sarah. <3

Is kind of like Red Dwarf. The TV show is very different to the books. When you don't have that visual medium for people to laugh at, you go with word play. I had a bunch of the books when I was laid up in the Navy and they were a godsend. I do love the TV show though, but that's more of a Brit thing. It's what the show "Men Behaving Badly" was probably influenced by.

Thank heavens for people who still know humour. :)

Yeah it's kind of amazing how much influence this one novel has had. I can see a lot of mirrors in a lot of modern authors.

Yeah, see that's kind of funny because I used to play Elite Dangerous, a space sim game. A British originated space sim game. And when they used to run beta tests for patches, especially to do with engineering... lol this will probably be all over your head. Sarah might get it though... the engineers all needed Fish to test the latest modifications. That's where it came from. Instead of actual components, all the engineers just wanted Fish. That's why.

I never understood that till now, lol.

Sarah... you need to go read "Snow White and the Seven Samurai" by Tom Holt. I think you might like it. ;)

Hi Everyone

As Sephirah alludes to Sarah, yes she understands what is going on.  I remember a long time ago reading about "Fish" in the code.  In addition I also played Elite Dangerous.  A more detailed explanation I think is needed so that others can follow the significance of the connection.

The phrase "So long, and thanks for all the fish" originates from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams.  In the first book, it is a humorous farewell left by the dolphins before the Earth was destroyed by the Vogans, while in the fourth book, "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish", it becomes a central theme, symbolizing departure before disaster.

Elite Dangerous, is a space simulation game developed by the British, the term "Fish" has a unique history tied to beta testing.  During updates, particularly those affecting engineering mechanics in the game, developers at Frontier Developments replaced the usual rare upgrade materials with "Fish" as a universal placeholder in the code.  This streamlined testing while adding an element of absurd humour, why would spaceship engineers require "Fish" for high tech modifications?

This decision was likely influenced by the game's British roots and the well known Hitchhiker's Guide reference.  Over time, "Fish" became an inside joke within the community and even made its way into some aspects of the game .  For those unfamiliar with its origin, seeing "Fish" in the code might seem odd, but its presence reflects both a practical solution and a nod to classic British sci fi humour.

Talking about these two subjects will always make me happy.

I will go out on a limb and say it was the Asp Explorer.

 Hi Sephirah

Unfortunately, I did not have a favourite ship,  I just picked the ones that I could afford, that were agile, fast and packed a punch.  I did enjoy exploring the galaxy.  I had two accounts as well.

Life got in the way as usual and I was still learning a lot about the games when I stop playing it.  I had thrustmaster warthog throttle, stick and TPR rudder.  Expensive I know.

I still love it by the way.  I'm thinking of getting back into it

The reminscences about Hitchhiker made me happy and the info about the Fish connection in Elite Dangerous (which I've never played) is interesting.

My first contact with the book was through listening to tapes of the BBC serial that preceded it.  They helped me to sleep without nightmares.

I'm still a big fan of Douglas Adams but he did annoy me at least once.  In the Hitchhiker sequel Life, the Universe amd Everything, there is a phrase "the long, dark tea-time of the soul", which struck a chord with me and became my personal quotation.  Adams ruined it for me by making it the title of one of his Dirk Gently novels.

I think that you may have more reading to do, Sephirah.  It is, after all, a trilogy in four parts.

You had a Warthog? *stares* They were like the Holy Grail of Elite players. They were the flight stick ripped out of the A-10 Thunderbolt. My friend had one of those. They were like the best you can get. I had an X-56 Hotas that I used with VR.. the warthog was like so next level, lol. You needed pedals because the stick didn't have a yaw axis.

That's hardcore, girl. Massive respect <3

I probably do, Mary, I am not on the level of you refined girls yet... but I just wanted to comment on this. I have been there too. Being able to sleep without nighmares. For me it was the "lost in space" 1965 radio show. It's what gets you through. And I very much understand and relate to that. We all find our safe harbour.

Thank you for sharing yours.

You need this, @Sarah B... or just a good VR headset. When I got into it, I had one of the first Oculus Rifts. Made the game something else, especially for someone who didn't need legs, but you know.. the game has moved on.

I don't play anymore, Sarah.  I only did that to store ship builds. Because I am a massive nerd. It means a lot that you think so. I never did youtube for youtube. I don't care about any of that. I know the game has changed a lot since we played. I still can't get over you having a Warthog. That was like the pinnacle of ED gaming! Just when I think I can't respect you more... :D O7, Cmdr.
