As I hope most here know I am not an America, I am a proud British woman. But.

I love baseball. I have been a baseball fan since I watched my first live match in 1978. Doing the "math" thats 46 years. In the early days it was hard to find out what was happening, but one newspaper gave the previous day scores in the sports section.

Then one of the TV channels (before cable / satallite) decided it could cheaply fill its late night slot with a baseball match. I either watched it live, blearily eyed the next day through lack of sleep, or if I had some tape video recorded it.

Then in 2002 MLB streamed its first live matches and I watched it on a tiny laptop screen where you could make out the pitcher has pitched and the batter swing then relied on the camera to show what happened as the ball was invisible.

Now I watch it in HD on the TV steamed by MLB with such amazing clarity that it could be local. I do not stay up all night like old but watch "afternoon" matches that I see starting from 6-9pm UK and finishing at reasonable time to go to bed.

So why have I mentioned all this, apart from it obviously being part of my like, and why have I not mentioned the team I support?

Well I am of a real diehard bred that stays with a team regardless of how good or bad a season is.

I know there are continuously poor teams in each league and their supporters are generally local and good too to support the local team. But have no allegiance to any team except going back to that first match in 1978.

That first match made an un-breaking bond between me and the team. It was at Fenway and against the Yankees and I have been a Red Sox fan ever since.

Though thick and thin, waiting for the first World Series win for near 100 years in 2002 (and me supporting them for 24 years at that point) to now bottom of the division last year,  losing seasons for the last 2 years and even though 2024 has just started heading that way again. But like a local Boston supporter and as a member of the Red Sox nation. I will continue to support them for ever.

PS K, with family in Florida is a Rays supporter!!!! Another reason to leave her? Only joking of course

Nice to be back after the weekend "break".

So this weekend, I had run out of money, not being paid until the end of the week. So it was a cheap stay at home. Eating out of the freezer instead of a restaurant. No fancy operas or classical concerts.

I was also in trouble for not mentioning the passport change but hay I was working on it. It's not easy to talk to K and tbh I getting fed up of not being able to live my life. I got the passport to get ID for security at work without outing myself beyond HR and security both very good to me but still very embarrassing.

Anyway, I spent the weekend renovating a 1961 Goldring Lenco GL75 turntable. I purchased it for £70 and gave it a good PM.

I replaced the tonearm (the weak point) and put in a lovely Linn ITOK spare (originally purchased 1986) and a AT33sa moving coil cartridge (spare).

The main part of the referb, however is I lovely hand built solid plinth that I acquired via a part exchange of an amp I was selling. The plinth is bare wood made of about 30 layers of high quality plywood.

I could have got it veneered, but left it naked with many layers of yacht varnish. It's now drying. I am hoping it will be dry enough to be able to rebuild it so to take the finished turntable to a group of friends on Sunday.

Still living out of the freezer 2 days to go

Hugs

Update on yesterdays post

I have rebuilt the GL75. I had a problem getting the tonearm connected as the limited space.

Left to do is to change the cartridge and align. That is a delicate task that will take 2-3 hours

Spot what's missing?

Well the nuclear button has been push and parliament is no more. The date of the next general election has been announced as July 4th. Independence Day from the Torys we hope.

Whatever government we get, as long as it is not conservative will better that what we have. So the campaigning begins. And I will see if I can help

The volume/power control?

Nice work, BTW. I was trying to picture what 30-layer plywood looks like. Learn something every day!
Thanks for sharing.

Maybe the journey isn't so much about becoming anything.
Maybe it's about un-becoming everything that isn't really you,
so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.

Dear Jessica:
Vert bice job on the turntable refurb...
... I really like what you did the the base... the display of the many layers of plywood and nicely varnished gives it a very nice appearance.

Great job.  Thank you for posting your photo of your efforts and sharing the results of your talents..
HUGS, Danielle
