Quote from: Northern Star Girl on July 27, 2025, 04:03:06 PMHopefully with the wild wet and hot weather that you are having it is
staying DRY and COOL inside your home....    hopefully no roof leaks? ???

The roof is fine, but when we had the monsoon downpour that I showed, the rain was hitting the front door so hard it began to seep under it. I put down a rolled-up beach towel, and that was enough to keep it at bay. We have had a few more downpours, but no issues with the door. I suspect the wind was blowing the rain right at the door when it happened. If it happens again, I will talk to maintenance about replacing the threshold and/or weatherstrip.

I have managed to almost clear the kitchen floor of camping and mining gear. I am slowly getting the workroom organized as well. Pics to follow when I get it done... or dangerously close to done.

Congratulations on getting moved in. I must say I am a little envious of the double recliner. I am still on the boxing up stage on my move. Must be nice to get unpacked.

Thanks, Gina!

It is still a work in progress, but I am down to just the workroom and bedroom to unpack and organize.

I ran into a glitch yesterday. One end of the loveseat sinks when seated, and the sofa makes a grinding noise when reclining. I called Furniture Row and spoke to my sales associate. She spoke with her manager, and they are dispatching a repair technician to come out and fix them. Unfortunately, the tech does not work for Furniture Row or LaZboy. He contracts for them to do repairs and won't be in my area until August 6th.

Oh well, that is what warranties are for.

I am still looking forward to a day when I have nothing to do and can take a drive down to the river to check out the geology.  ;D

Dear Lori:
Be watchful, and be safe and careful.

Is your home in a low lying area... creeks ponds, etc???  OR are you at a
high and dry area above where water collects?    Your neighbors will be
helpful with their advice.

Again, be watchful, listen to the local news stations, etc.

At least you won't have to water your lawn.

I'm in a mobile home, so my floor is about five feet above the ground. Since I am in the city, the storm drains handle it pretty well. It is just during our monsoon season that the drains can get overwhelmed. On top of that, the city has been doing storm drain repairs for the past few months, so hopefully, their capacity will improve.

This storm is slow-moving, so they expect it to dump a lot of rain. We have two flood warnings expiring now, but another that will go to 9 pm. Then another round will hit us after midnight, and again tomorrow. So I am watching.

The local news is hilarious. The weather guy comes on with a big red banner that says "WEATHER ALERT". He says we are under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning and Flash Flood Warnings across several counties. Stay tuned, and we will tell you how to remain safe right after this.

Then they go to a commercial break and show seven commercials about things that I have no interest in. Yeah, thanks for the warnings.  Those commercials are more important than telling people how to be safe.

As long as the Arkansas River doesn't rise about forty feet, I am ok.

So now, I am listening to an oldie by Johnny Cash.  ;D

No, but I am familiar with this area. Southern Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona have monsoon season this time of year. Deserts are prone to flash flooding because there isn't a bunch of grass growing to slow down the water flow. The upside is that the water doesn't stay long. It quickly drains through the sandy soil. So I am not upset.  :)

I am glad you are not upset.  Will you be able to do gold prospecting near where you live?

Just try to stop me!

Yes, there are historical gold-bearing locations closer to the mountains, along the Arkansas River. I haven't had time to go scout them, but I am researching them. I have four locations that I am eager to go see and do some sampling. I'll also need to consult the USGS Stream Gauge data to see how high and fast the water is flowing. It may be close to Labor Day before I can get out there, but we will see.

Today, the furniture repairman came out to see what was wrong with my new sofa and loveseat. I had them for two days and noticed that the left side sagged on both, and the sofa's recline mechanism made a grinding sound.

The repairman looked at the loveseat and found a broken wheel, a bent mechanism, and a broken drawer. The sofa had a broken wheel, but the mechanism was not bent. He said replacing the mechanism is an easy job, but since the loveseat has a broken wheel, a bent mechanism, and a broken drawer, the store may just opt to replace the entire loveseat. He will talk to the manager this afternoon and contact me to let me know if it will be repaired or replaced.

I questioned why the damage on two different pieces is on the left side of each. He said it clearly happened during shipping. In the truck, they stand the furniture on end to save space. They are not designed to be in that position, especially not during transport. But it is a standard practice.

OK, if their policy causes damage and they need to pay for warranty repairs or replacements, maybe they should reconsider their policy? Maybe they don't get much breakage during shipping, and I am just the lucky one to get two broken pieces. Maybe instead of installing plastic rollers in the mechanism, hardened steel would be a better option.

Oh well. <sigh>  :)

Often things are not made as well as in prior years.  This can keep prices down and profits stable or higher.

What makes things difficult for consumers is the inconsistent quality of product and services.

So that is why in the USA, McDonald's wants their Big Mac to be made, to look, and taste the same at any of its restaurants.  Consistency is important in many ways.

Don't ask what was going on in the truck during shipping... that's all I'll say. :P 50/50 shot it had nothing to do with how they placed the furniture...

Anyway! It always amazes me just how far south you are to me in the UK. It's easy to kind of forget that because of the climate. You're much closer to the equator. That always blows my mind.

Today is a warm one. The weather service says we may break a heat record today or tomorrow. The record is 102, and my phone says that is where we are now. I stepped outside to get mail, and I think the 102 is the reading at the airport... inside the Control Tower... with the AC on high!

I have the workroom mostly presentable (pics soon, I promise). The jewelry bench is done, so I took the pieces that I have already made and ran them through the ultrasonic cleaner.

The tumbler bench needs more organization. The lower shelf will hold all three rock tumblers. I put down some packing foam on the shelf, and the tumblers sit on that to absorb some of the vibration. When all three are going, I have tumbling 15 lbs of rocks. I have an old sleeping bag that goes under the shelf to help with sound dampening.

Two of the tumblers are almost ready to go; they just need maintenance first. A quick cleaning and a drop of oil on the bearings, and they will be ready. The third tumbler is my "problem child". It is on its third rebuild. Ugh.

It is a Chicago Electric (Harbor Freight) brand. Shortly after I bought it, I found a design flaw. Instead of roller bearings on the shafts, it had plastic bushings that held the rollers off the metal frame. The rollers are metal shafts that support the barrels that are holding six pounds of rocks (3 lbs per barrel). It looks good on paper, but when you add dust, dirt, and silicon carbide abrasive grit, plastic bushings will not last very long.

I ordered four steel roller bearings (used in 3D printers) to replace the plastic bushings. The bearings were the wrong size due to a Standard-to-Metric calculation error. Then a guy I know through an online Rock Tumbling Group, referred me to another guy who makes a plastic-to-metal-bearing conversion kit specifically for this model rock tumbler. Apparently, I'm not the only one disappointed in the poor design.

The conversion kit worked very well, and we were up and running again... sort of. The original design allows two 3-lb barrels to roll inside the metal frame with very little wiggle room. When you add the new bearing housing on each end of the two roller shafts, things get really tight. Too tight. Fortunately, the bearing mounts are made of plastic, and there is exactly enough room between the outer circumference and the metal bearing. A quick trim with the Dremel tool removed just enough of the housing to allow the barrel to roll without compromising the mount.

Before long, it was back up and doing its job. Then, while doing the next maintenance, I noticed that one of the shafts had slid completely out of one of the end bearings. When the shaft was rolling inside the plastic bushing with grease and dirt, and abrasive grit, it wore down the ends of the shaft, making the groove too shallow for the snap rings to keep it in place. The snap ring popped off, allowing the shaft to slide out.

Grrr. Time to fix another flaw. I plan to just drill holes near the ends of the shafts and secure them with Cotter pins. Easy-peazy. But to get to the end of the shafts to remove them, one must first remove the cover and pull the drive motor. And for some mysterious reason, the motor mounting screws were cross-threaded and couldn't be removed. I cut off the screws, put everything in a box, and sealed it with massive amounts of duct tape and Holy Water. I put it in a box and forgot about it until after I moved to Colorado.

So, here I am. I have managed to remove all of the duct tape, and the machine is now on my workbench. I have replacement screws (steel, not aluminum this time), nuts, flat washers, and lock washers. Everything I need to put this beast back together.

Except that I forgot that I still need to drill holes in the roller shafts, and I don't have any Cotter pins.  >:(

I just got a text message from our power company, nicknamed "Flicker & Flash". Due to the high heat, the power grid in Colorado is under heavy load. They have asked everyone to turn off unnecessary lights and equipment and avoid using any major appliances until 10 PM to avoid rolling brown-outs.

Dear Lori: What is going on in Colorado?
? The sun is not shining bright enough?  Not enough wind blowing ?

What you are describing would not work well here in Alaska, long bitter cold winter,
long 22+ hours of night - no sun...

Being able to handle a heavy " electric base load" at any time of day or night regardless
of what the sun and the wind are doing is what makes hydro, nuclear, and even fossil fuel power plants
a clear choice for "primary" power generation.
The other stuff is fine for supplementing the power needs of the grid.

It is important to not throw out the baby with the bath water as there is an effort continually strive
for cleaner energy.

Unfortunately Hydro dams are being dismantled to save the fish, nuclear has a bad name, and fossil
fuel generation with coal, natural gas, or oil and even heating my home with a wood stove...
...all of them are unpopular with many zealous environmental groups.
Certainty, Electic Vehicles have their own set of pollution issues.

Just my kilowatt of opinion... that is all.

We are in one of those "heat domes" that has been moving across the continental U.S.

We have had 100+ degrees for the past few days, with 3 more days of it in the forecast. People are using the AC and just doing things as they normally would. The message was likely just pre-emptive to warn people to cut back usage and let us know that rolling brown-outs are possible.

This part of Colorado is famous for its mild climate. Not too hot, not too cold. It is an arid desert, but we have the Rocky Mountains nearby. Since the record high set in 2022 was only 102, that kind of shows that this kind of heat is not all that common. Even when it snows, it doesn't last long.

So far, no power problems. I blame those hippies with their electric cars hogging up all the electricity.  ;D

I just saw on the news that Phoenix, AZ, is at 116 degrees, so I can't complain.  :)
