Australian Study Reveals Low Rates of Reidentification Among Transgender Youth

Story by Mia Lee (6 March 2024)
An Australian study has offered new insights into the experiences of transgender youth seeking gender-affirming medical care. This research, conducted at Perth Children's Hospital's Child and Adolescent Health Service Gender Diversity Service, is critical in understanding the longevity and outcomes of gender transitions in young individuals.
The retrospective cohortstudy tracked 548 individuals with closed referrals to the pediatric gender clinic from 2014 through 2020, providing a comprehensive look at the rate at which individuals reassumed their birth-registered gender identity. The findings indicated that out of these cases, only 29, or 5.3%, reidentified with their birth-registered sex before or during their assessment phase. Two out of these individuals were identified again during medical treatment, which is equal to 1.0% of all patients who started medical treatment.
The study's significance lies in its illumination of a topic often fraught with limited data. The relatively low reidentification rates gleaned from the Gender Diversity Service's patient cohort provide valuable empirical evidence to the ongoing discourse on the efficacy and appropriateness of gender-affirming care for young people.

And every one of that 5.3% will be used as reasons to stop the other 94.7% from getting the care they need.
I have heard politicians here on TERF island say if they save just one from regret it is worth the safeguarding by banning trans care (apart from conversion therapy!) to all minors.

I wonder how many of that 5.3% had a lack of support. Experienced bullying, or maybe lived in a hostile environment. Studies like this tell us
what
happened, but they don't dig into
why
it happened.
