Danielle,

I was wondering how long guests are logged in.  Members can select a login time length.
All users are not logged in after they close their Web browsers after visiting Susan's.

I ask only because of the displayed user count of those guests logged in.  Would guests remain logged in forever if they never closed their Web browsers or are they automatically signed off after a set timeframe?

Just curious.

Chrissy

As I understand it, guests are not logged in. They are just viewing the site, so the duration would be determined by how long their browser has the page open on the site.

I guess I should have used different terminology.  Insofar as showing the count of guests currently online, this count is decremented each time a guest closes her or his Web browser page that was viewing Susan's, right?  It would also be incremented when a guest opens up to Susan's Web site.

I guess I was trying to see how many ACTIVE guests were online at any one time, that is, guests who are actually doing something on Susan's, not simply having their Web browser windows opened up to Susan's.

But a member may also just be logged on and not actively doing anything, she just has not logged off.

This question was simply made out of curiosity.

Thank you.

*Most of them don't bite. I, however, am not to be trusted.

Some of them will of course be snooping from the other side of the fence.

But unlike them we don't exclude, right? We are welcoming and inclusive.

So to them too: come on in and realise that we're all on this journey together.

As I remember, the "online" counter is on a 30 minute refresh. Maybe we should send @Northern Star Girl down into the belly of the beast to research it.

@Devlyn
Dear Devlyn:
As you personally proclaimed about yourself in another recent thread....
"Not too bad! The old grey sponge still holds information."

You are quite correct.
After a member logs out, or closes their browser which essentially logs them out, they will still be
shown as "online" for 30 minutes.
In the past it has always been that way as far as I recall.

After the January 01, 2024 site crash, the "timer" was screwed up along with many other settings, so
I had reset it to 30 minutes as we were trying to get the Forum back into operation.

Yeah, when I first joined I never knew that. Back in the mists of time it never used to state "in the last XX minutes". I used to log in from work, initially (probably not a really smart thing to do in hindsight), and one time I forgot to log out. I was mortified that I would be online for like all night and people would think I was ignoring them if they tried to talk to me. :embarrassed:

3000+ guests is just wild to me. Most online is stated at over 11,000. That's just... crazy. They aren't all search engine bots. Easily the most since I've been here.

Seriously... take the plunge, folks. Come on in and say hello. You don't have to go through this alone, okay? I promise you, this site has the most compassionate, understanding staff you're likely to find. Has done for years. Welcoming you with open arms, as well as members here. It's one big family.

I know it's scary. But courage isn't a lack of fear. It's feeling terrified but doing it anyway. No one will judge you. No one will say you're whatever for feeling the way you do. You're literally only a few clicks away from a whole bunch of amazing people helping you with whatever you need. Take that step. You might be glad you did. :)

I've been lurking in this thread the while and it just occurred to me, has anyone asked new joiners how long they read Susan's as guests before joining, and why they didn't join? Maybe there's a clue to be found about why so many don't join? For instance, I had to try seven different emails before I found one the autoresponder would send a reply to, hence my being TanyaG!
