Story by K8 Newsdesk (5 June 2024)

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KAIT/KARK) – A Pulaski County judge issued an injunction on Wednesday, halting a new Arkansas regulation that banned the use of non-gender-specific indicators on driver's licenses.

In March 2024, the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration announced the policy, which says driver's license must list gender only as male or female, noting the gender must be what is listed on the license holder's birth certificate. The policy also says an "X" to signify which gender the holder is not permitted.

According to content partner KARK, five people filed a lawsuit against the agency over the rule change in April 2024, saying the order did not follow the state requirements for an emergency ruling.

The agency will hold a public hearing about the gender rule on Friday, June 7, from 9 a.m. until noon in Little Rock.
