Story by Les Carpenter (9 Aug 2024)

PARIS — As chants of "Imane, Imane, Imane" rang down from the stands of famed Roland-Garros, Imane Khelif pummeled China's Liu Yang to easily win gold at the Paris Games, capping a bizarre romp through the Olympic boxing tournament.

When her name was announced as the winner, Khelif hugged Yang, pumped her fist and looked stunned for a moment. Then, as she has for other wins here, she danced excited circles around the ring before dropping down to pose for pictures. She leaped on the shoulders of one of her coaches, who then carried her in a circle around the arena floor while Algerian music pumped through the speakers.

Khelif, who's been cemented at the center of a "gender eligibility" dispute that has baffled her and the people around her, looked locked in from the start of the 66-kilogram (146-pound) fight. She burst into the ring before the bell at each round and took control with flurries of punches. She won the fight by unanimous decision, winning every round on every judge's scorecard.

Nearly three hours before Khelif's fight Friday, Algerian fans began spilling through the stadium's gates. They gathered in groups, waving Algerian flags, dancing and chanting "1,2,3, Viva-l'Algerie!"

"She is ours, and we support her," Boudgema said,

Based on the information I have seen, Imane Khelif is not transgender. However, all of the discussion about her dances around that subject. Congratulations, Imane!!!

I don't.. after reading all this.. it makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. I hate how this Olympic games has been a war of identity. Which I guess that's what most of it ends up being. But moreso now than ever. The lasting impression of all this is how they deal with the whole trans thing.
