Story by Tom Beattie (11 Aug 2024)

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Taiwanese fighter Lin Yu-ting are slated to bear their countries' flags at the Paris Olympics closing ceremony, following a controversy over their eligibility to compete. A dispute arose during the Games when both athletes were allowed to participate despite failing unspecified gender tests set by the IBA prior to last year's World Championships.

However, the IOC cleared them for Olympic competition as they met the necessary criteria. Khelif silenced her critics by clinching gold in the light-welterweight category, while Lin triumphed in the featherweight final.

Their victories, despite facing a barrage of social media criticism, symbolize their nations' support. After defeating Liu Yang via unanimous decision on Friday, Khelif made a heartfelt appeal for a shift in attitudes from her critics. "I send a message to all the people of the world to uphold the Olympic principles and the Olympic Charter, to refrain from bullying all athletes, because this has effects, massive effects," she said.

"It can destroy people, it can kill people's thoughts, spirit and mind. It can divide people. And because of that, I ask them to refrain from bullying. Providing details about how the gender row had affected her family," the Algerian hero added.
