How do I determine my size in women's jeans?
  •

Jessica_Rose

Do you have a Ouija board?

Seriously, every manufacturer seems to be a little different. The style, cut, and fabric content also play a significant role. The starting point would be to measure your waist, hips, and inseam, then go to the manufacturers website and see which sizes are closest to your measurements. If the jeans are 100% cotton, consider going a size larger because they will have zero stretch. I prefer jeans with at least 1% lycra (2% is much better), because they provide a snug, yet comfortable fit. Good luck.

P.S. - Don't expect to be able to use the front pockets, they are usually quite shallow.

This question can have complex or lengthy answers.

There will be several replies to your question I am sure.

Be aware that there are low, medium, and high rise jeans also.  Plus different styles and leg widths and lengths.  Tightness and loose fits also factor in.  Curvy and straight leg too.  Some have extra stretchiness.

The big bugaboo are the multiple cuts and sizing among manufacturers.

You want them to be comfortable.  Perhaps you might want them to show off your assets or figure, and that does not necessarily mean they need to be tight to do that.  Of course, you need the figure though.

A slightly bigger pair or a curvy cut pair of jeans may give the appearance of more curviness.

Ask others about using hip pads as I have never used any.  If you use them though, you will need to have the right fitting jeans for when you wear them.

Is it really that bad?  Why is nothing straight forward in women sizing?  Beginning to think I'll need a doctorate to get properly dressed. 😊

Depending on the fabric content and manufacturer, I usually wear a size 8. Occasionally a size 6 will fit, but sometimes even a size 10 will be too tight. Most major brands are usually fairly close in sizing, but always be prepared to go up or down at least one size when trying them on. Length is also an issue for me. I think the standard length for ladies jeans is around 29 inches, while 'long' can mean anywhere from 32 - 35 inches. I have a 34 inch inseam.

Tops are just as bad. I can usually pick up a top and tell if it will fit without trying it on. However, if I'm ordering online it's like rolling the dice. I have tops marked everywhere from 'XS' to 'L', and they all fit.

The easiest way is to take a measurement around your waist and the widest point of your hips, plus your inseam before choosing a brand and use their sizing chart. Assuming you are ordering over the web, if in any doubt order the size above or below and be prepared to send one pair back.

It helps reading customer reviews, because many will say whether the fit is tight or not. With stretch jeans it isn't quite so critical, obvs. Be aware that jeans cut to fit women around the waist will often be fuller around the ass and also that low rise jeans don't work well on a male pelvis, because it is a completely different shape. They often fall down. Otherwise, it depends on the style of the jeans - skinnies are tapered for female proportion calves, etc.

Safest first buy is probably high rise straight leg or bootcut jeans from the cheap end of a major brand, or from a national retailers own brand. Over here we have Marks and Spencer and Next, but the US has equivalents.

It is better than it used to be with the big brands and retailers, in the UK at least. Where it gets funky is with clothes like sweaters and tops made to have a baggy fit. But that's no different to tshirts for guys, where M or L can mean almost anything.

Where it gets a bit crazy is with things like holdups, which don't have a recognised sizing system and where a tall in one brand will fit me just fine, while a medium in another comes too high on the leg.

Or heels, where it pays to go a size down on flats. Again, with a bit of trial and error you will learn to find your way around the brands and discover shoes that fit.

Tracie,

TIP:  After you find a style and size that fits from a clothing brand, then generally for the same type of clothing (office appropriate blouse, as an example) (same style of jeans, as an another example) then you are probably safe to pick another with the same brand, size, and style for that same type of clothing item.

This does not necessarily mean a duplicate item!  Perhaps a different pattern, color, etc. but from the same clothing brand.

You can go by measurement charts, but it is still guesswork.  The chart will tell you which size to try on first.  But then you have to adjust as necessary.  And each brand will fit slightly differently.  You just have to remember what brand and size fits you well.  If you change brands, start over.

I am usually a medium in bottoms and a large in tops.  For numbered sizes, I start with a 10, but I could be a 9 or an 11, depending.  Shoe sizes are the same: 10 as a first guess, but I might end up with a 9.5 or a 10.5.  ANd don't even get me started on bra sizing!

LOL.  It's ok Kathy, Tonya has already thoroughly covered bra sizing in her super informative how-to guide. It is absolutely a must have for beginners like myself or anyone struggling with bra fitting actually.

You will not need a doctorate degree.  Besides some with doctorates are not that bright for everyday matters, no offense meant to them.

You just need to be patient and try on lots of clothes after you get a good starting size.

Tracie,

There is soooo much nice female clothing.  For me, it one of the pleasures of being female.

You will find nice outfits.  Strangely enough, what you like others may not think looks good on you, despite your happiness with how it looks.  For that reason, it is nice to have a friend give her honest opinion to you about your choices of clothing and clothing combinations.  Even better, clothes shop together.  Then that is an outing in itself!

At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot, would the hip measurement be across the fullest point of my ass?

Yes. Find the widest place by standing in front of a mirror naked - it should be at around the level where your hips articulate. Then measure round keeping the tape level.

Thanks for all the advice.  I've pulled the trigger on a pair of midrise jeans with 2% spandex.  And thus it begins 😊
