Pennsylvania Parents Can Now Remove Their Kids From Any School Lessons About Trans People

Story by Samantha Riedel (11 Oct 2024)

A Pennsylvania district court has ruled that the Mt. Lebanon School District must allow parents to remove their children from any lessons or classroom activities about transgender identity, in a decision that has reportedly stunned local LGBTQ+ advocates.

In her decision issued September 30, U.S. District Judge Joy Flowers Conti found that the school district violated a group of parents' rights after a teacher read two books about trans people to her first grade class on Trans Day of Visibility in 2022. According to court filings, the class listened to the educational trans picture books When Aiden Became A Brother by Kyle Lukoff and Introducing Teddy by Jessica Walton — both of which have been targets of anti-LGBTQ+ book bans for years. Parents filed suit in June that year, alleging the district had violated their constitutional rights under the First and Fourteenth Amendments.

Conti ruled that because the district previously provided written notice for parents to opt their children out of other lessons and presentations (such as dissecting animals and religious holiday stories), but did not allow the plaintiffs to opt out of the TDOV storytime, it had discriminated against them and their religious beliefs. The lack of notice was "constitutionally impermissible," Conti wrote, granting the plaintiffs declaratory relief.

First grade? A bunch of six-year-olds. And we wonder why there are accusations of "grooming".

I hope those books were age-appropriate and the teacher was qualified to answer questions about the stories. This is just my opinion, but I think six-year-olds have more important things to study... like spelling and arithmetic.
