The GOP's obsession with Congress' first trans member has a much uglier purpose

Story by Alex Bollinger (21 Nov 2024)

House Republicans have spent the past week arguing about restrooms, but it really has nothing to do with restrooms. It's about respect.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) introduced a resolution to ban Rep.-elect Sarah McBride (D-DE) from using women's facilities on the Hill on Tuesday, and by Wednesday Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) issued a rule requiring people to only use restrooms that align with their sex assigned at birth.

There have been transgender people in Congress before. Trans people have visited the Capitol to sightsee and lobby Congress on various issues. Trans people have been interns and worked on congressional staffs. Trans reporters have interviewed members of Congress or attended hearings, along with trans witnesses at those hearings. A few members of Congress have trans family members and children who have visited them at work.

Mace never said anything in all the years she was in Congress about any of these people using the restroom.

But this issue is now bigger than McBride.

Trans people who want to talk to their members of Congress are going to be denied their right to petition their elected officials. And for trans staff, this creates a labor issue.

This is honestly gross. And Republicans have far too a creepy obsession with peoples' genetalia. Just sayin'.

Yeah, I saw a youtube clip today with, uh, what's his name.. the Bubba-Ho-Tep of US politics, that Cruz fellow? Asking the most loaded question in the history of the world. He was like "well why do you want boys using girls bathrooms?"

Can you say missing the point?

That really is the point. 'They' refuse to accept the reality of transition. Oddly, they don't seem to be concerned about transgender men, but for some reason a transgender woman is the ultimate threat -- regardless of what their genitals look like. Someone in the Washington D.C. area should organize a group of transgender men to cycle through the Capitol Building ladies room. It should be no issue at all, that's exactly what the Speaker has requested.

Love always -- Jess

No and that's the thing. It's the same in the UK. It always comes down to trans women. When it comes to trans guys it's like "Yeah, dude, you want to be one of the dudes! Welcome to the club!" It's misogyny of the highest order. It's shameful. These mouth-breathers just don't understand why anyone born male would give that up. Because people born both male or female consider trans women a threat. For different reasons. But both utterly nonsensical and a li'l bit shady.
