Story by Jon Holmes (30 Dec 2024)

Dawn Staley knew exactly what would happen when she declared her support for trans women playing women's sports.

At a media conference before the NCAA Final Four championship game — which head coach Staley's South Carolina Gamecocks would win, to complete an undefeated season — she was asked for her opinion on a topic that had no bearing on the tournament in Cleveland.

She responded by going firmly on the record as a trans ally, regardless of the cost.

"If you consider yourself a woman, and you want to play sports, or vice versa, you should be able to play," said Staley.

Asked if she meant in the women's category, she added: "Yes. So now the barnstorm of people are going to flood my timeline and be a distraction to me, on one of the biggest days of our game.

"And I'm OK with that."
