The VA does not cover everything, same as Medicare. Things like "cosmetic" surgery. Medicare was covering Gender Affirming surgeries on a case by case basis. They have a string of requirements, but would approve it. The VA will not under any circumstances.
My thinking was that since the VA will not cover surgery, I could get Medicare to cover it. The VA will cover all pre-op screenings, letters, evaluations, etc. but not the actual surgery. They will also cover all post-op care, including revisions if needed. So it makes sense to have both so that different things are covered in the overlap.
But if both are refusing coverage, I see no need to pay Medicare a premium. I'll keep the free VA care amd discounted meds for as long as it is available. I haven't used Medicare for anything since 2019. Medicare uses the threat of a penalty to keep people from opting out. In some places, this would be called "extortion".
