Married Women Could Be Stopped From Voting Under SAVE Act

https://www.newsweek.com/married-women-stopped-voting-save-act-2029325

By Sophie Clark (11 Feb 2025)

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act could prevent many married women from being able to register to vote.

The act, reintroduced by Texas Republican Representative Chip Roy, is intended to amend the National Voter Registration Act to ensure that all people registering to vote are U.S. citizens. It would require people to present in-person documentation as proof of citizenship when registering to vote.

Much of the documentation listed under the SAVE Act is based on having a birth certificate that matches the person registering to vote. However, as many as 69 million married women in the United States have changed their legal name since getting married, meaning their name does not match their birth certificate.

If they do not have a passport, which nearly 146 million people in the U.S. do not have, it will be much more difficult for those who have changed their name to register to vote under the SAVE Act.

The SAVE Act lists several types of documentation that would be accepted, including a form of identification issued consistent with the requirements of the REAL ID Act of 2005, a valid United States passport, valid military ID, forms of Tribal identification, and proof of naturalization.

The SAVE Act does not include proof of name change or a marriage certificate as acceptable proof of identity. This is vital for married women with a birth certificate that does not match their current legal name.

All US states have implemented the REAL ID Act of 2005.  It's also easy to get a REAL ID.  In fact, if you have renewed your Driver's License in the last 5 year you probably already have one.  If you  have renewed in the last 10 years you may have one.  Longer ago than that in some states.

The REAL ID act allows for the use of marriage certificates and, some other documents as proof of name change.

Odd that Sophie Clark does not mention that in the article, is isn't it?

This is why trust in the media has hit an all-time low, again in 2024.

Thanks to everyone here who contributed to and shared lists of tasks to accomplish before Trump was inaugurated.  We only got passports so we could stay together if we need to escape. Now, I find that it is protecting our right to vote. Wow.

This is alarming, and relatable. My wife recently got her "RealID", and had to make 5 separate trips for document issues with having changed her name with marriage.
