A trans National Guard pilot was falsely accused of flying the helicopter in the fatal plane collision

Story by Liam Reilly (31 Jan 2025)

A trans member of the National Guard is speaking out after a wave of claims on social media falsely pointed to her as the pilot of the Black Hawk helicopter that collided with a passenger jet in Washington, Wednesday, killing 67 people.

Jo Ellis, a UH60 Black Hawk helicopter pilot for the Virginia Army National Guard, posted on Facebook Friday to dispel the rumors that had echoed President Donald Trump's unsubstantiated blaming of diversity initiatives for the fatal accident.

"Some craziness has happened on the internet and I'm being named as one of the pilots of the DC crash," Ellis wrote. "It's insulting to the victims and families of those lost and they deserve better than this BS from the bots and trolls of the internet."

In her Facebook post, Ellis shared a screenshot of two X posts that linked her being trans to the catastrophic crash, with one user saying they "wouldn't be surprised" if "the pilot was trans" in response to another post that claimed Ellis "has been making radicalized anti-Trump statements on socials. The latter account has since deleted the post and published an apology.

A separate account, which has a blue checkmark and 13,600 followers, shared a now-deleted post directly attacking Ellis and spreading the bogus conspiracy theory. While the account has likewise issued a correction, the post still raked in at least 195,000 views and was reshared almost 1,000 times before being deleted.

Of course it would be the "Internet cesspool formerly known as Twitter."

Heinrich Musk probably got his rocks off to this whole thing.

She should sue the people that posted it and reposted it and the platform. Stick it to them.

I agree, but I doubt it would get anywhere. We're living in an age where the people in control of almost everything have more money to do basically whatever they want. If Herr Musk got fined 200 million dollars, he'd just rummage down the back of his sofa to pay it off.

I just want to give props to Jo, though. Those helos are like... that girl got skillz. To be able to fly one of those hovering fortresses, that takes some serious training and concentration. Not something you just have a brainfart in and crash into another aircraft.

...

True.  I'm guessing that when you mentioned Heinrich Musk you were referring to Elon.  Elon Musk called heroic cave rescuer Vernon Unsworth a "pedo".  He then apologised but later sent an email to a reporter calling Unsworth a child rapist.  Unsworth sued but even though Musk admitted that he never really believed that Unsworth was guilty of those crimes, Unsworth lost his case.  What a difference an expensive lawyer makes.  Cicero himself admitted that he won cases by (figuratively) throwing sand in the faces of the judges.

(During the mass purging of pre-Christian books by Christians, lawyers must have persuaded the mob to leave them alone.  Of the Latin works up to the time of Cicero that still exist, more than half are Cicero's.  Lawyers rule.)
