Christian School Cites Bible for Playing Game Against Transgender Athlete

Story by Rachel Dobkin (19 Feb 2025)

A Christian school cited the Bible as its reason to compete against a fellow California high school in a coming girls' basketball playoff game in which a transgender athlete will take the court.

In a statement shared with Newsweek on Wednesday, Cornerstone Christian School Principal Logan Heyer said the school's decision "is based on the belief that engaging with others in a spirit of kindness and respect, even when we may disagree on certain matters, is an important part of showing Christ's love to the world."

Heyer later put out a statement saying that Cornerstone Christian chose to proceed with the game against Waldorf, despite the school having a transgender athlete on its team.

"As a school, we are committed to upholding biblical principles in all of our decisions and actions. While we may not agree with or support the transgender movement, we firmly believe in the biblical call to love our neighbors as ourselves, as instructed in Matthew 22:39. This principle guides us to extend compassion, respect, and grace to all individuals, regardless of their beliefs or identities," Heyer's statement read.

The principal added: "We understand that this is a complex issue, but we are committed to educating our students with a biblical worldview, which means demonstrating to them what it looks like to be a follower of Christ, and really loving people who we disagree with. It is our hope that this game can be an opportunity for sportsmanship, mutual respect, and more importantly a demonstration of the love of Christ in a tangible way."

It's so refreshing to finally hear a Christian organization using the bible to support individuals 'regardless of their beliefs or identities'. Thank you, principal Heyer.
