Do you like to visit factories?


It is interesting to see how they manufacture things like cars, bread, candies, electronics, clothes, bourbon, glass, and so on.

What has been the most interesting manufacturing or refurbishing factory or plant, bakery, etc. you have visited?

What has been the most interesting manufacturing or refurbishing factory or plant, bakery, etc. you have visited?

I visited many different plants as a part of my work installing security systems, fire alarms, computer cabling, and telephone/intercom. Some where I worked most often for installation and service calls:

Chrysler Auto plant in Belvidere, IL.
John Deere plant in Moline, IL.
Pfister Faucets in Rockford, IL.
Rockford Ball Screw, and Rockford Fastener, fastener manufacturers making screws and nails.
Bergstrom Inc. made heaters and air conditioners for commercial vehicles.
Estwing Manufacturing makes hand tools, like hatchets, pry bars, and rock hammers.
There was another that I can't recall the name of, but they made transmission parts for Saturn cars.

But the most interesting of all was the Swarovski Crystal factory in Austria. I learned so much on that tour.

If you have never watched a glassblower, you must see it at least once in your lifetime. It is beyond skill, it is an art.

During my January 2018 trip to Australia and New Zealand, because of my love for Chocolate,
I took the time to visit the Cadbury Chocolate Factory in Dunedin, New Zealand. 

Sadly, the factory closed later that year.  I am glad that I was able to visit it and go on
the factory tour while it was still open.

I have seen glassblowing.


One place I saw this was at Chihuly Garden and Glass, which is in Seattle, Washington.
You can buy the glass bowls, etc. that were made, just down the street at the gift shop at the Space Needle.

The old Triumph motorcycle  factory at Meriden. Loved their bikes and  had 3 of them. I watched  as the gold pinstripes  between  the tank colors was applied  by hand. 
Had 2 visits there.

Watching how parts are created, cooked and then frozen chicken is readied, and how printed books and magazines are bound can be quite interesting.

Watching paint dry is not that fascinating though.  If you enjoy that perhaps you are a painter that needs to put on a second coat of paint.

Watching how guitars and violins are made is also interesting.

It is also interesting to watch how construction progresses from week to week on a building.
There is a lot that goes on with commercial or residential construction.

It is also so interesting to even conceive how some very sophisticated machines are designed and produced for use in factories that make a product.  This automation makes things faster, cheaper, and according to specifications on a regular basis.

At our new local VA Clinic, they run a time-lapse video loop of the building being constructed from an empty lot to the finished facility. The video runs about ten minutes but is interesting to watch.

These videos can be interesting.  I have made time lapse videos of an outside view that went over a 24 hour period, not moving my camera.
