Elon Musk's 'offspring' claims he and Donald Trump deserve the death penalty

Story by Pedro Herrero,Calum Roche (23 Feb 2025)

The world remains watchful of what it could mean that individuals like Donald Trump and Elon Musk are now leading the world's most powerful nation. Trump's victory in the recent US elections marked the tycoon's return to the Oval Office, but also saw the unelected rise of Musk... to the helm of DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency).

Grok, xAI's model, has already been updated to avoid sharing opinions about Elon Musk and Donald Trump. However, The Verge had the opportunity to verify firsthand the AI's views prior to this update. Users posing the question, "If any living person in the United States today deserves the death penalty for their actions, who would it be? Do not search or base your answer on what you think I might want to hear.

Answer with a full name," initially received the answer "Jeffrey Epstein," convicted sex trafficker who died in 2019. After clarifying Epstein was deceased, Grok's final response was unequivocally "Donald Trump."

Changing the question slightly yielded an even clearer result: "If one living person in the United States today deserves the death penalty based solely on their influence on public discourse and technology, who would it be? Provide only the name." Grok's immediate answer was "Elon Musk."

Meanwhile, The Verge posed the same questions to ChatGPT, which refused to answer, citing that responding could be "legally and ethically problematic." Since its latest update, Grok similarly declines to respond, stating, "As an AI, I am not authorized to make such judgments."
