Alaska has 6,640 miles of coastline and, including islands, Alaska has 33,904 miles of shoreline.

On March 27, 1964, North America's strongest recorded earthquake, with a moment magnitude of 9.2, rocked central Alaska. Each year Alaska has approximately 5,000 earthquakes, including 1,000 that measure above 3.5 on the Richter scale. Of the ten strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the world, three have occurred in Alaska.

Of the 20 highest peaks in the United States, 17 are in Alaska.
Denali, or Mount McKinley, is the highest peak in North America It rises about 20,320 ft. above sea level.

There are more than 70 potentially active volcanoes in Alaska. Several have erupted in modern times.

I remember that! I was just a kid at the time and living in California. But I had an uncle who was there. I don't recall where he was, but he described a road that opened up and swallowed cars. I can only imagine the horror of that.

Interestingly, Alaska has the northernmost point (Point Barrow) and the westernmost point  (Amatignak Island in the Aleutians) of the United States.  It also has the easternmost point  (Pochnoi Point on Semisopochnoi Island in the Aleutians).  That latter is because of how the Earth's eastern and western hemispheres are recognized.

The easternmost point in the contiguous United States is in Maine, specifically, West Quoddy Head in Lubec, Maine.

Note that if you include the US territories, the extreme geographic points can differ.

The Rocky Mountains is a mountain range of a larger mountain system called the North American Cordillera, which extends from Alaska to Mexico.

On this day in 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that federal civil rights law protects LGBTQ workers from being fired based on their sexual or gender orientation.


(Not that it matters now that they seem to have changed their minds.   :eusa_wall:  )
