Americans Are Divided on Issues Related to Transgender People, but Often Don't Want the Federal Government Involved

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, more than 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced in 2025 alone, most of which specifically target transgender people. Simultaneously, President Donald Trump has signed a slew of executive orders restricting the rights of transgender individuals and eliminating inclusive policies and language formerly used across the federal government.

A new Data for Progress survey examined the impacts of these recent policies on transgender adults and measured public opinion on many of these policies among the general population of U.S. adults.

So Republicans tend to be more anti-trans than Democrats, which in the curent era, at least, is not a surprise.

I am not American and have never really been able to tell the difference between a Republican and a Democrat.  Certainly the difference is not as marked as it was between the UK's Labour and Conservative parties before Tony Blair ushered in "New Labour".

I gather that Democrats are supposed to have a bit more of a social conscience than Republicans.  Yet even that was not always clear cut.

It was Democrats who once supported the Jim Crow laws and Republicans who argued against them. 

It seemed to me that there were once four major American parties rather than two, i.e. capitalist Northern Republicans, liberal Southern Republicans, slightly socialist Northern Democrats and racist Southern Democrats.

From what I can tell, there doesn't seem to be a North/South divide on the subject of transgender people but perhaps I would have a different perception if I were more politically aware of US affairs.

For many years, I preferred Democrats in State and local government and Republicans in federal government. Democrats were more focused on social programs that helped people with everything from housing to medical care. Republicans were more focused on a small federal government (the way our Founding Fathers intended), strong military defense, and defense of the Constitution.

They still support these core issues, but the Democrats have lost their backbone. Even when they had a majority in Congress, they did nothing with it.

The Republicans no longer defend the Constitution, and are using the "small federal government" as an excuse to cut social welfare programs with Musk's chainsaw. The Founding Fathers envisioned a group of sovereign states united under a national government that would protect the borders, mint currency, and regulate trade. That is why we are called the United States of America.

They will strengthen military defense, as we have already seen because we are going to need it now that we are the enemy of our once-allies. In the direction we are heading, we will become the Divided States of America or the Eastern Territories of China.

I'm not sure facts and data, party affiliation or country of origin, have much to do with the trans debate. It's visceral.
