These states/DC are rated highest in the Human Rights Campaign's 2024 State Equality Index for comprehensive protections (IDs, healthcare access, nondiscrimination, school policies, hate-crime coverage, etc.):
CA, CO, CT, DE, DC, HI, IL, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OR, RI, VT, VA, WA.
States HRC rates lowest overall most likely to have bans/restrictions on care, school participation, bathroom access, IDs, etc.:
AL, AR, AZ, FL, GA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, OH, OK, SC, SD, TN, TX, WV, WY.
This doesn't mean that those less riskier states are totally free of bias.
Where ever the human spirit exists "incidents will happen"!
But compared to some rural or politically hostile states, New York and California are probably in one of the safest pockets of the country for being openly transgender.
