Minnesota teen says server forced her to prove her gender in restaurant bathroom

Jo Yurcaba (12 Aug 2025)

A Minnesota teen filed a charge of discrimination against a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant on Tuesday after she alleged that a server followed her into the women's restroom and demanded she "prove" she was a girl.

Gerika Mudra, 18, went to dinner in April with a friend in Owatonna, about an hour south of Minneapolis. When she went to the restroom, a server followed her inside and banged on the stall door while saying, "This is a women's restroom. The man needs to get out of here," according to Gender Justice, a Minnesota gender-equality organization that filed the charge on Mudra's behalf.

Mudra, a biracial lesbian who is not transgender, said she's been in similar situations before, where people have suggested she's in the wrong restroom, but when she tells them she's a woman they leave her alone. However, when she came out of the stall at Buffalo Wild Wings and told the server, "I am a lady," she said the server responded, "You have to get out now," according to a statement shared by Gender Justice.

Mudra said she had to prove to the server that she is a woman by unzipping her hoodie to show she has breasts. The server didn't say anything in response but left the restroom, Mudra said.

"She made me feel very uncomfortable," Mudra said. "After that, I just don't like going in public bathrooms. I just hold it in. ... I want to be able to use the bathroom in peace."

That is ridiculous.  While I can see that there may be some sex confusion if a woman prefers to look and looks masculine, and asking by staff is intrusive enough (they may be trying to comply with laws, why else would they ask?), this is ridiculous.

Thumbs down.
Always stay cheerful, be polite, kind, and understanding. Accepting yourself as the woman you are is very liberating.  Never underestimate the appreciation and respect of authenticity.  Help connect a person to someone that may be able to help that person.  Be brave, be strong.  A TRUE friend is a treasure.  Relationships are very important, people are important, and the sooner we all realize that the better off the world will be.  Try a little kindness.  Be generous with your time, energy, wisdom, and resources.   Inconvenience yourself to help someone.   I am a brown eyed, brown haired woman.

As a server, it is none of her business. She is not law enforcement, nor management. I would tell her to get a manager AND the police, then flash everyone.  ;D
