Most people focus on pitch alone, and they sound like a cartoon character. The key is "forward resonance," which adds a softness to your tone. Men speak from their chest, which gives it a low booming tone. Women speak from their mouths, which gives a warmer pitch and a softer tone.
I thought my voice coach was crazy when she had me try to speak through a drinking straw in a glass of water. I splashed water all over! Then I realized what she was teaching me. When doing that, you are using your mouth to speak, not your chest. I kept practicing, and it works!
I don't have the "perfect" voice. I would kill to have Renee Zellweger's voice! We often have a goal in mind and get frustrated when we don't achieve it. The chances are that you have been speaking for years without thinking about it. And now you want to change all that. You don't need a high-pitched squeaky voice that does not sound natural coming out of your face.
Many women have deeper voices, but what sets them apart is the softness of their tone. Listen to women like Oprah Winfrey, Toni Braxton, Brett Butler, Bea Arthur, Tiffani Amber Thiessen, Julia Stiles, Rosie O'Donnell, and Whoopi Goldberg.
Your voice is unique to you. Play with it, experiment, and finally, you will settle on what is natural for you.
