Susan

Welcome to the official Staff Member Appreciation Day thread. Today we celebrate the people who keep this community running with care, steadiness, and heart. Our staff make this a place where members feel safe, seen, and supported; they show up when it's hard, they de-escalate when it's tense, and they lift spirits when it matters most. This is their day.

Use this space to share your thanks. Tell a story about a time a staff member helped you through something difficult. Describe how someone's kindness, professionalism, or judgment made a difference. Recognize the quiet, consistent work that often goes unseen. Your note can be a couple of sincere sentences or a longer reflection—what matters is that it's genuine.

Staff, please feel free to appreciate one another as well. You know better than anyone the unseen labor, late nights, and teamwork that keep this place welcoming. Let's fill this thread with the gratitude our team has earned many times over.

To all of my staff!

I couldn't run this site without you, so my words simply cannot capture the overwhelming gratitude I have for each of you! But, I will give it a try. Today, on Staff Member Appreciation Day, I want to shout from the rooftops just how phenomenal you are. You dedicate your time, energy, and passion to making our community the incredible space it has become.

To My Administrators

You are my partners, my advisors, and the pillars that hold everything together. The weight you carry, the decisions you make, the countless hours you invest - none of it goes unnoticed. Your strategic thinking, your crisis management, your ability to see the big picture while never losing sight of individual needs - it's leadership at its absolute finest. You've helped build not just a website, but a home for thousands of people, and you do it with such humility and grace that I'm constantly in awe.

To Northern Star Girl (Danielle), our Forum Administrator

Danielle, you are the guardian angel of our forums and an absolute force of nature. You maintain order while nurturing creativity and meaningful discussions with something close to magic. You have this remarkable gift of spotting potential issues early and handling them with such finesse that members never realize the incredible work happening behind the scenes. Your attention to detail, your fairness, and your genuine investment in every member's experience make you the backbone of our forum community. We are blessed beyond measure to have you.

To King Catshark (Flan), our Chat Administrator

Flan, you are nothing short of miraculous. The way you navigate the fast-paced world of chat with grace, wisdom, and genuine care is absolutely awe-inspiring. Every single day, you bring a perfect blend of leadership and compassion that makes everyone feel heard, valued, and welcome. Your dedication goes far beyond moderating - you're building connections, fostering friendships, and creating a space where people feel safe to be themselves. You are irreplaceable, and this community shines brighter because of your unwavering commitment.

To My Forum Staff

You are the architects of meaningful conversation and the protectors of our community's culture. The way you encourage shy members to participate and maintain the delicate balance between freedom and structure is masterful. You pour over every post, every thread, every concern with dedication that takes my breath away. Your thoughtful responses and creative solutions have transformed our forums into a thriving ecosystem of ideas, support, and connection. You don't just moderate - you inspire, guide, and elevate every interaction.

To My Chat Staff

You incredible human beings are the lifeblood of our real-time community. Day after day, hour after hour, you show up with enthusiasm, patience, and endless kindness. You protect our chatters from trolls and attackers of all kinds. You manage chaos with smiles on your faces, defuse tensions with remarkable skill, and make every single person who enters our chat feel like they belong. Your quick thinking and empathy create joy even in challenging moments. Each of you brings something unique and invaluable; together, you've created something truly extraordinary.

To My Entire Team - You Are the Heart and Soul of Everything We've Built

Every single day, you choose to show up. You choose to care. You go above and beyond what anyone could reasonably expect. You handle criticism with dignity, celebrate others' successes as your own, and pour love into this community - even when it's challenging, even when you're tired, even when no one's watching.

You are not just staff members - you are the heartbeat of this community. You are the reason people return day after day. You are the difference between a website and a family.

From the absolute depths of my heart - THANK YOU. Thank you for your sacrifices, your late nights, your brilliant ideas, your problem-solving, your compassion, and your unwavering belief in what we're building together.

You are appreciated beyond measure, valued beyond words, and loved beyond expression.

With infinite gratitude and admiration 😻🫂🔥,

Celebrating Our Amazing Staff - October 1st

Today, we celebrate Staff Appreciation Day, but honestly, staff appreciation on the Susan's Place Forum is something I think about each and every day.

I cannot express enough recognition and appreciation for our incredible Staff members. I am deeply grateful for their passion and
diligence as they carry out their duties with such dedication.

As Forum Administrator, I am in contact with my Forum Staff daily and often well into the late evening hours... and I am continually impressed by their commitment.

Recognizing Our Outstanding FORUM Global Moderator Team

Each of the following Global Moderators carries multiple responsibilities, serving also as News Staff and Official Greeters.
Our Global Moderators work tirelessly, greeting new members and carefully reviewing the countless posts our community submits each day.

Devlyn
Devlyn has extensive experience in various Susan's Place staff roles for the over 15+ years with experiece
as a Retired Forum Administrator, Former and present Global Moderator, News Staff, and Retired Links Administrator.

Devlyn is our favorite globe trotter! She has been the backbone of our community for 15+ years, bringing wisdom from her time in
the multitude of staff roles that she actively participated in.

She's made quite the journey from Massachusetts to the UK, and now to sunny Spain with her life-mate. Her patient mentoring of
newly appointed staff members and her knack for defusing tense situations with just the right words makes her invaluable.

We love hearing about her adventures across the pond.
Being in Europe she gives us terrific additional time zone coverage for our world wide Forum.

I am very proud to share that Devlyn is a Military Veteran, US Army.

Lori Dee
After losing her previous member account as a result of the New Year's 2024 Susan's Place site crash, LoriDee was able
to re-register with a new member account and become very active on the Forum and was a "quick study" learning the ropes navigating the Forum.
ONE MONTH later I appointed her as an Official Greeter and then just 6 months after that I then appointed her as a Global Moderator and she has done an absolutely superb job in her current staff role.

LoriDee has become quite adept at finding spammers on the Forum and therefore among our Moderation Team she has became known as our SPAMMER HUNTRESS

She recently relocated from South Dakota to Colorado... her hobbies include metal detecting, rock hounding, and she is a real life Gold Digger.

I am proud to say that LoriDee is a US ARMY Veteran.  She served as a Staff Sergeant, and Tank Master Gunner on the M60A3 tank.
She has stories about shooting the Big Guns on the US Army tanks.

Sarah B
As a result of the New Year's 2024 Susan's Place site crash, Sarah B lost her 10 year old member account but was able to recover her account and most of her postings.
She immediately picked up where she left off and again became very active on the Forum and quickly found her way around the Forum once again.

ONE MONTH later I appointed her as an Official Greeter and then just 6 months after that I then appointed her as
a Global Moderator...
...I am very pleased with the way that she handles herself in the Global Moderator staff role...
she has done an absolutely superb job in the details of the tasks that she is involved in.

She has become very good at finding spammers and therefore I have started addressing her as our SPAM HUNTER

Sarah B loves swimming, including swimming laps in some of her local swimming pools.
She resides in the "Land Down Under" in Australia so her time zone is a big help as we interface
with our members from around the globe.

NOTE:  Regarding LoriDee and Sarah B
If what I have been stating about Sarah B sounds very familiar, this is because it is almost exactly what I had been saying about Lori Dee
They both came back to the Forum after the site crash with a fervent desire to get involved and take the time to learn about the
inner workings of the Forum.
They have displayed such similar personalities with their Forum activities that I might be starting to think that they are twin sisters.
Sarah B and LoriDee have become good Forum friends and I much enjoy having them on my Forum staff working the staff tasks with them.

Jessica_Rose
Joining Susan's Place in March of 2017 Jessica has been a very active member on the Forum.
She was appointed as a Global Moderator in 2022.

Jessica has been married to the love of her life for 41 years and they renewed their vows and married each other again 4 years ago.
They have two lovely adult daughters.

Photography is one of Jessica's hobbies that she shares with us on the Forum with her depicting beautiful scenes of nature, flowers, and
very close-up shots of insects, small animals and birds in her pictures she posts on the Forum.

She has been working for a large insurance company since 2006 and recently relocated from Arkansas to her new home in Colorado.  Her friendly and helpful attitude is perfectly suited
for her Global Moderator Staff Position and I am very thankful to have her on the Forum Staff in this important role.
She frequently is involved in friendly and supportive Forum comment exchanges with many of our members.

Jessica is very active in her NEWS Staff role and is quite prolific in very frequently posting NEWS stories that are of interest to our LGBTQ+ membership.

Mariah
A member since June 2013, Mariah brings many years of  valuable experience from her many previous staff roles including
Chat Moderator on our Susan's Place Discord server, Retired Forum NEWS Administrator, and former and now present Forum Global Moderator.
Mariah is an important part of our Forum Staff and I always look forward to her sharing wise advice.

Community Protection and Organization

Our dedicated News Staff does exceptional work finding and sharing stories relevant to our LGBTQ+ membership—what a gift to our community!
Meanwhile, our friendly and wonderful Official Greeters ensure every new member feels welcomed from their first moments here.

Our staff works diligently to keep Susan's Place Forum free from spammers, trolls, troublemakers, and inappropriate content. We maintain
organized sub-forums that help members easily find the information and support they're seeking, and
we're always ready to help members navigate Forum features or resolve any technical issues.

Creating a Safe Sanctuary

Above all, we strive to keep the Forum as a safe place and sanctuary for our members—both new and longtime community members.
Our passion is providing support and encouragement to those going through difficult times. We gladly offer our ears to listen and
our shoulders to lean on, and when members share success stories and good news, we celebrate and rejoice with them.

Honoring Our Foundation
Susan
None of this would have been possible without the remarkable insight and vision of Susan,
our Susan's Place Founder and Website Administrator, who started this incredible journey 30 years ago
in 1995. Her pioneering spirit and dedication continue to inspire everything we do.

To Northern Star Girl,

Thank you for helping me with logging into Discord. I also thank you for adding me to your buddies list. That was a kind gesture that really meant alot. Thank you so much! 🙂

Pema

I don't have a specific story to share, but I will absolutely join in on the appreciation of the staff here, including you, Susan.

I spent 25+ years building and maintaining websites of all kinds, many with forum components. I know what's involved in keeping them functioning not only technologically but (especially) with the content/user/social aspects. Humans are complicated, and the deeply personal and sensitive nature of the context of this site makes all of that even more critical. And yet, the staff make it look effortless - even though I know it isn't.

I see the way you make sure that absolutely everyone is seen and heard, their situations and feelings valued. It's so much more than keeping things running smoothly; it's keeping *people* going. Literally. It requires a blend of technical and social skills that most people don't possess. We are blessed to have such people here.

So let's celebrate every one of you today, but for me every day is Staff Appreciation Day at Susan's Place.

I love you all.

My Staff Appreciation Tribute

Susan - our Founder

What can I say? Without Susan, none of us would be here. - Fact.

Her untiring efforts behind the scenes are amazing. When the site has issues, whether it is a power outage or a software problem,  we know that she is on it and it will be fixed soon. The old site lost a lot of functionality when it crashed, but she got it back up and running quickly. There is still work to be done, but she is always looking for ways to make the site better; better looking and easier to use for everyone. Thank you, Susan.

Danielle - our Forum Administrator, has a wonderful management style. She is all hands-on in helping her Moderators, helping our members, working behind the scenes with Susan, and helping to solve problems across the site.
I admire that when she has a tough decision to make about an issue, she takes time to thoroughly evaluate the situation, seeks input from her team, reviews all of the possible outcomes or impacts upon the members, and then makes a very careful and wise decision. I am always learning by observing how she handles things. Thank you, Danielle, for your excellent leadership and mentorship.

Devlyn - as a Retired Forum Administrator, Devlyn has a great understanding of how the site works behind the scenes. She has seen the site evolve for 15 years and has played a key role in keeping the site running smoothly. She has a keen eye for spotting things that need attention. She has a way of explaining why certain policies were put into place, or how a given situation should be handled to make the site the best for all of its members. I have learned a lot, and am still learning from her. Thank you, Devlyn.

Mariah - I was pretty certain that Mariah was here in a Staff position before Susan created the place, but apparently that is not true. She has vast experience in a wide variety of Staff positions on the Forum and as our Chat Moderator. As a Significant Other, Mariah also brings another perspective that is not available to some of us. She has a calmness to her wisdom that is very refreshing. I learned so much just from reading some of her older posts. Thank you, Mariah.

Jessica_Rose - What our members don't know is that Jessica is one of the Staff members who helped get Susan's Place back on its feet after the New Year's Day site crash. She is great at finding content that our members enjoy reading, and when action is needed to protect the site, she is quick to act to get it resolved. She, too, has a calm and wise way of helping the staff help our members. I continue to learn from her every day. Now, I am honored to call her my friend and neighbor. Thank you, Jessica.

Sarah B - Sarah has been a member of this site for a long time and has been a great contributor in offering support and assistance to our members. When she and I were asked to join the Forum Staff, we became sisters-in-arms. We help each other, learn from each other, and work as a team to look after our membership. Sarah has a great way of analyzing things and getting them organized into coherent, logical thoughts. This has proved very helpful for members who are struggling with tough decisions. She pays close attention to what our members say and connects with them to offer needed support. Thank you, Sis.

Lori Dee - Me? I'm the newcomer here. I have limited Moderator experience compared to the others, but I try to use my skillset while learning what I can from the others to make Susan's Place as wonderful as possible.

We have a fantastic team here. We have people from all walks of life, who live in different time zones, and even different countries and continents. This helps us be available around the clock and provides us with a variety of global perspectives so that we can provide the best assistance to our members in this ever-changing world. Each of us has our strengths and weaknesses, but as a team we work together and have each other's backs.

To all of the Staff, I am honored to stand among you. Thank you.

Where do I even start with this?

Well, firstly I want to thank not only the current staff members, but past staff members. Those who are no longer with us, for whatever reason, and those who have hung up their hats and retired among a field of back porches and straw hats. In my time here I have known a great many. Far too many to name individually, through various branches of the Susan's infrastructure. You know who you are. All your hard work and dedication to making a place where people can feel safe, welcome, wanted, appreciated and cared for... is, and was seen, and immeasurably appreciated.

There has been a certain thread running throughout all these people... a good many I have come to consider friends. A certain temperament, quality of spirit, attitude... call it whatever you will. Chief among which is a desire to make this place the best it can be. And that is tempered by a willingness to work tirelessly in order to do that. To dedicate their time to other people, and making sure no one is unheard. That everyone has a voice. And everyone is treated fairly.

I have a small inkling of what life is like on that side of things. I know a bit about how the job can be, and what people sometimes have to deal with. The measure of someone is how they can show their grace under fire, and how they can be an ambassador for this place and everything it stands for. It has been my honour and privilege to have known a lot of folks like that over the years.

Now... onto today.

Lori and Sarah... you ladies are among my best friends. You have a seemingly infinite amount of patience and kindness. Not to mention wisdom. It is a blessing to know both of you and I am glad you are here keeping watch. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Danielle... I have known you since you were a whipper-snapper to the site. Your momentum, enthusiasm and drive is, frankly, incredible. If the answer to unlimited energy could manifest in a person... girl, you'd have the whole world after you. Not even kidding. Thank you for being you.

Jessica... you have always had such kindness and grace. Always there with a smile and a kind word for everyone around you. You are like the calm lake when all around feels like raging waterfalls. You exude calm and strength like an aura, and it radiates outwards. Thank you for your guidance and gentleness.

Mariah... you will go out of your way to make sure other people are okay. To make sure no one feels alone, even when sometimes that's all they feel. You are the hug everyone needs, even when they don't know they need it. Thank you for your shoulder to cry on.

Devlyn... ahh, Dev. We've known each other a long time and sometimes the road has been rocky. But you are a straight shooter and I respect that immensely. One always knows where they are with our Dev. You will stand up for anyone and champion those who desperately need it. You are someone who will give everything for what she believes in, and that self same to help other people believe in themselves. Thank you for keeping me honest.

And Susan... I have known you the longest. You have created something incredible. Something that, over the years has become my home, and a home to countless other lost souls. Tirelessly. Welcoming everyone with open arms and a smile. Thank you for taking a chance on a naïve youngster many years ago. It will never be forgotten.

It can be sometimes tiring, sometimes thankless, sometimes hard, sometimes painful, sometimes fun and sometimes wonderful... but it's always a huge privilege and honour to be involved with this place and making sure it remains true to what it stands for.

Thank you to everyone who is, and everyone who was a part of keeping the machinery of Susan's Place running. You will always have my love and gratitude. 🙂
Natura nihil frustra facit.

Above all... remember: you are beautiful, you are valuable, and you have a shining spark of magnificence within you. Don't let anyone take that from you. Embrace who you are. <3

Omg, what a beautiful thread!

I just want to thank all the incredible staff members here at Susan's Place. Your dedication, guidance, and care have made a significant difference in my life.

As someone navigating my transition, the safe and welcoming space you create has been invaluable. The resources you share, the support you offer, and the encouragement you provide every day have helped me know where to begin, find my confidence, and feel supported on this journey.

And there's more than just medical and professional stuff, there's also a sense of family and friendship here, a feeling that we genuinely know and care for each other, even though we haven't met in person and are miles apart.

To the entire staff team, your patience, empathy, and unwavering commitment turn this forum into a true sanctuary. Every post, every message, and every thoughtful action contributes to making this community a place where I feel safe, seen, and empowered.
