I'm a conversion-therapy survivor. I know firsthand the impossible task, and death-dealing effects, of trying to "pray the gay away."

Today, I'm also a researcher who focuses my work on conversion therapy, which is nothing short of damaging, degrading, and definitional abuse. Time and again, through my research, I am reminded of not only how ineffective such "therapy" is but also the significant psychological, emotional, spiritual, and sometimes even physical harm that this work wreaks on LGBTQ+ individuals, including and especially children.

That is why I, along with other survivors and researchers, anxiously await the ruling of Chiles v. Salazar, the Supreme Court case concerning the legality of conversion therapy for minors. With the case currently underway, we know that the lawsuit will most certainly have far-reaching implications.

The petitioner in this case, Kaley Chiles, is a Christian counselor who is challenging the state of Colorado's law that protects anyone under the age of 18 from licensed mental health care professionals attempting to change their sexualities and/or genders. Chiles claims that the current law violates her freedom of speech.

What Chiles does not seem to understand, however, is that all licensed professionals—whether they be physicians, engineers, or counselors like her—are beholden to ethical codes of conduct that limit free speech while on the clock. Simply because one holds sincerely held (religious) beliefs does not mean that a person has the license to voice those beliefs at work, especially if they have the potential to cause harm.

Conversion therapy is child abuse. The sexualites of the victims and perps are irrelevant.
