Clarke's study - entitled 'Girls play with dolls, boys play with soldiers: teachers' and parents' gender beliefs and the gender identity of Jamaican eight to 10-year-old boys" - highlighted a number of double standards from both parents and teachers in how they interact with boys compared with girls, as contributing to the under-performance of the former in the classroom.
