Charlize Theron is a decent actress and she gave a good performance in Monster.

I think that getting ugly gets you nominated, but its playing disabled or diseased
(AIDS, Rain Man, My left foot, Cancer, etc) which usually gets you the win.

The film was based on a story written by a women, everyone (except the Academy) focused on the boys gettin it on in the hills, its really about what happens to women they left behind.  Yeesh.

1966

Dame Elizabeth also won in 1960 for BUtterfield8 and should actually have won for other roles had Hollywood not considered her a "scarlet woman."

I'm not as familiar as some with Ledger's career having not seen BBM or many of his other roles.  I did think he did an adequate job as one of Mel Gibson's sons in The Patriot.

He wasn't bad in Knights Tale either, a movie not without its charms.  10 Things I Hate About You is not all horrible either.

Still, I'm going to remained more concerned about the American Troops, and Iraq civilians that died last week, more than Heath.

And Liz also should have got it for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.  She was born to play the kind of women that Tennessee Williams created.  And I thought her and RB were pretty special in Taming of the Shrew.  Still, she did to Cleopatra.

Of that, there is no doubt.  She was to a smoldering barely hidden sexuality what Audry Hepburn was to charm and grace.  We all age and it does beat the alternative but it is so sad to see Liz in a wheelchair nowadays and remember the beauty that was.

Absolutely, every death is sad, especially unnecessary ones. There is so much misery in the world.

The alternative to growing old is not all that hot either.

Over 5 million people have been killed in the Congo in the last 10 year and still at a rate of 45000 a month as the news does a tap dance around an actor.

Yeah, Central Africa is in such a sad state it's scary. Tinpot dictators kept in power by big business... and more tinpot dictators knocking on the door - or more often trying to take it down with an AK47...

It's really a sad commentary on all of us...society as a whole.  We would rather know about the sordid details of an actors death or the latest instance of some half-crazed blond so called singer running over someone's foot than we would genocide in the Congo or Somalia and the stealing of an election in Kenya (which, according to a Kenyan minister I know the US is NOT totally blameless).  The problem is, the news only reflects what we (as a whole) want to see.  But when you think about it, it goes all the way to the top.  Republicans argue over who can be the worst bigot and promote "preservation of family values" which means discrimination against a minority, not banning divorce and preserving families.  Meanwhile Democrats argue about who meant what when they voted on something in the Senate in past years.  Not a single one of them on either side says a word on what to do about selling our economic assets to China and Dubai and anyone else who has a couple of extra billion to spend.  Nor do they say a word about how they are going to change the worlds attitude so that the US is not hated by the rest of the world like no one since Nazi Germany.  And we have let our educational system dumb us down until we are so gullible we buy into the whole mess.

Back to you Katie for the latest on who's in revolving door rehab.

Sheesh, if I had the money, I would buy an island and start my own country.
