Thanks all, these songs are so great.  I'd like to go ahead and add another song that touched me.  It came to mean something to me when I finally reconciled my male and female sides.  They had been going in two directions for a while, and finally I realized that both sides of me had good traits and bad that were a part of me as a whole, and that neither needed to be abandoned or neglected.  Being one or the other, I was two different strangers walking past each other.  Then again I wasn't much of a Journey fan until the past year and a half.  I was too much of a pessimist to enjoy their music (think angry German industrial music.) :)

Journey - Don't stop believing

Just a small town girl, livin in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin anywhere
Just a city boy, born and raised in south detroit
He took the midnight train goin anywhere

A singer in a smokey room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people, living just to find emotion
Hiding, somewhere in the night

Working hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin anything to roll the dice,
Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

(chorus)

This song means a great deal to me. It's helped me more than i can express to any of you. It spoke out against violence, helped to break race stigmas and told us not to judge people on how they dressed. I drown in its depth.

QuoteAt the very beginning of transition, "Reflection" from Mulan.  Probably the best body dismorphic theme song.  EVAR.

I was going to say that one too!

But I'll take Queen's  Don't Stop Me Now

Tonight Im gonna have myself a real good time
I feel alive and the world turning inside out yeah!
And floating around in ecstasy
So dont stop me now dont stop me
cause Im having a good time having a good time

Im a shooting star leaping through the sky
Like a tiger defying the laws of gravity
Im a racing car passing by like lady godiva
Im gonna go go go
Theres no stopping me

Im burning through the sky yeah!
Two hundred degrees
Thats why they call me mister fahrenheit
Im travling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic man out of you

Dont stop me now Im having such a good time
Im having a ball dont stop me now
If you wanna have a good time just give me a call
Dont stop me now (cause Im havin a good time)
Dont stop me now (yes Im havin a good time)
I dont want to stop at all

Im a rocket ship on my way to mars
On a collision course
I am a satellite Im out of control
I am a sex machine ready to reload
Like an atom bomb about to
Oh oh oh oh oh explode

Im burning through the sky yeah!
Two hundred degrees
Thats why they call me mister fahrenheit
Im travling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic woman of you

For me there is only one real choice, especially as I am pre-op. It's by the Welsh band The Manic Street Preachers, it's called "Born a `Girl" and the lyrics are:
QuoteDo I look good for you tonight
Will you accuse me as I hide
Behind these layers of disguise
In the mirrors of my own happiness

Ive loved the freedom of being inside
Need a new start and a different time
Something grows in the space between me
And its twisting and changing this fragile body

And I wish I had been born a girl instead of what I am
Yes I wish I had been born a girl and not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man

The censorship of my skin
Is screaming inside and from within
Theres no room in this world for a girl like me
And place around there where I fit in

And I wish I had been born a girl instead of what I am
Yes I wish I had been born a girl and not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man

metallica's nothing else matters.

an odd choice, coming from a punk girl, too  ???

Awesome song! I haven't transitioned yet, but my favorite song that helps me get though depression is 'The Unforgiven' by Metallica, and it's sequel, 'The Unforgiven II'.

"The Ballad" by Testament from the 1989 recording "Practice What You Preach"

QuoteI'm not one to say
Where my feelings are going when they wither away
I pray to see another day
My heart's feeling like a needle lost in the hay
Restrained to meet again
My friend do you think that we ever will
I know we are free...

The games are played with your life on the line
Some lose, you win if you keep on trying
I don't mind doing the time, I'm happier being alive
Now I know the means to my opression were all lies
The only truth is your own most sacred lesson I've ever learned
I know we are free...

Yeah,
Don't go,
No,
Don't look back,
Just realize

I've been robbed, I've been fooled
I intent now to make my own rules
Dagger's edge cut the life, I've been down that road too many times

What's to fear, fear no more,
Show my conscience what fear's for
Now I know this is so real
What's done is done so do as you will!

I'm keeping alive! Go on, no don't look back
Just realise where you've gone.
Where are you going to, no life's not done wit you
You're only just begun, to live your life, for you...
I have always liked this song but ever since I have started my transition, there are so many lines in this song that relate to what I have been going through. Today I put this song on because I had not listened to it in a long time and I have not stop playing it (current time is approximately two and half hours and the song is only six minutes long. :D) It is pretty comical when you think about it (playing it so much repeatedly) but its just so beautiful and really fits the mood today.  ;D

Four songs! (today)

Fiona Apple: A Better Version of Me

The nickel dropped
When I was on
My way beyond
The Rubicon
What did I do

And of the games that I can handle
None are ones worth the candle
What can I do

I'm a frightened, fickle person
Fighting, cryin', kickin', cursin'
What should I do

Oooh, after all the folderol,
And hauling over coals stops
What will I do

Can't take a good day without a bad one
Don't feel just to smile until I've had one
Where did I learn

I make a fuss about a little thing
The rhyme is losing to the riddling
Where's the turn

I don't want a home, I'd ruin that
Home is where my habits have a habitat
Why give it a turn

Oh, after all the folderol
And hauling over coals stops
What did I learn

I am likely to miss the main event
If I stop to cry or complain again
So I will keep a deliberate pace
Let the damned breeze dry my face

Oh, mister, wait until you see
What I'm gonna be

I've got a plan, a demand and it just began
And if you're right, you'll agree

Here's coming a better version of me
Here it comes a better version of me
Here it comes a better version of me

Goldfrapp- Slide In

You send me just colours
I´m waiting, don´t hold back
Trees bow to the wind
And I´m falling inside you

Slide in
Feel the future
Rushing Slowly
Right now

So close I could
touch it
I´m dreaming
Don´t wake up

Slide in
Feel the future
Rushing slowly
Light now

Nothing makes me
Feel like
Show me real love
Right now

A poem by Meena, the founder of the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan, expresses my transition experience perfectly in the refrain:

I'm the woman who has awoken
I've found my path, and I will never go back

Since you asked for a song, this poem has been set to music... http://www.rawa.org/ill.htm
Here's what I find about compromise--
don't do it if it hurts inside,
'cause either way you're screwed,
eventually you'll find
you may as well feel good;
you may as well have some pride

I went through all the music I like and I don't have a song that I can directly relate to my transition. I like a lot of different musical styles of music and I am also a musician and songwriter but I've never been able to write a song about it either...

I'm trying to work on a few songs on my experiences with transitioning/dating/etc.  We should exchange recordings when you get some stuff down!

I haven't written anything new since 1997 although I had some of my songs on a band CD release in 2002. I have tried to write new stuff and it's been very hard, probably writers block? I'm not sure transition would be an issue I would write about anyway..

I don't have a theme song either. I'm also a musician, and I did write a number of songs and poems during transition. Will have to record them someday.

Its the lyrics that impressed me.

Star Trek: Enterprise (theme song)

AS HEARD ON SHOW

It's been a long road - getting from there to here.
It's been a long time, but my time is finally near

And I will see my dream come alive at last. I will touch the sky.
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No, they're not gonna change my mind
Cause I got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I got faith to believe I can do anything.
I got strength of the soul and no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star. I got faith. Faith of the heart.

COMPLETE LYRICS

"The magic of believing is this: if we really believe in ourselves, our heart will take us to the highest plateau of personal success. Nothing will stop us as long as we have faith in our hearts."

It's been a long road - Getting from there to here.
It's been a long time, but my time is finally near.

And I can feel the change in the wind right now
Nothing's in my way
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No, they're not gonna hold me now

Chorus:
Cause I got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I got faith to believe. I can do anything.
I got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star. I got faith. Faith of the heart
