Almost four months after a federal judge recommended a new trial for Dean Gutierrez, the disgraced former San Antonio police officer Tuesday avoided that spectacle — and further jail time — by pleading guilty to violating the civil rights of a transgender person who had accused him of a 2005 rape in the back seat of a squad car.
