Hi everyone,

Just wanted to know if anyone has had favorable results with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), either done professionally or with home-use devices? Currently debating on whether to get laser or IPL hair removal (slightly leaning toward IPL since it's cheaper  :D).

Thanks!

I don't really have specific advice for you, sorry.

I'm not a big fan of IPL, but it's not necessarily a bad choice.

Both IPL and laser work on the same rough principle.  Both use a pulse of energy of a specific wavelength designed to heat the melanin in hair.  This destroys the hair (hopefully) without damaging the skin, and in the case of those hairs still in the growth phase, the sudden burst of heat destroys the follicle as well.  Both are rather uncomfortable but tolerable, and both take anywhere between 6-10 treatments to remove most of the visible hair.

I'm kinda torn here.  As the actual technology behind laser (the machines themselves) is becoming more affordable, more widespread, and more effective, laser is becoming more of an attractive option.  Compared to even 10 years ago, it's now safer, more comfortable, much more effective on dark-skinned individuals, and much cheaper.

By the same token, pulsed light (which was a bit of a junk treatment very early on) has gotten a lot better.  The biggest issue with pulsed light before was its lack of effectiveness, but the latest and best machines seem to do a lot better.

The best specific advice I can give you is this: first, find the specific IPL machine which the place you're considering is using.  From there, go to a forum focusing on hair removal (there are a few) and ask around as to whether those people have good experiences with it.  And remember, while your mind is female, your hair (for now) is still male, in terms of both density and the thickness of individual hair.  So I would make sure to ask guys for their opinion.

As I have stated before..
Intense pulsed light...light bulb....plain and simple....
It will burn hair but not deep enough for us..
It's good for a chalk white cis girl with black hair

I did ipl ONCE...it was marketed to me as ipl laser...
Than found out it has no laser!!!
So basically I got super heated face....and I mean heated
For hours and hours.

I learned from a very experienced laser tech ..a real one...
That ipl won't do what we want with male fueled hair...
It just can't.  It will remove it.  That's it..

Like I say over and over lightsheer highspeed duet honey...
that's the gold standard ....nd yag is tested to be very
High also...

Lightsheer duet is good.  3 sessions on face and I can shave away my shadow.  Hoping after 6 or 7 that I just need electro for the gray.

Thanks for all the input. I'll scour other forums for more info, but I might also go for actual consultations from both IPL and laser techs.

Again, much thanks!  :D
