"Sen. Chris Buttars' comments, including his penitence before a predominantly black Baptist church, makes one consider how often the sum totality of an individual is reduced into one or two words.  Buttars' discomfort at being characterized as a racist was unsettling enough for him to take extraordinary steps to show he was more complex, more human than reflected in a single word.
