Column: When a job well done is not enough

I had always thought that if I worked hard and did my job well, it would be enough to retain my job and even advance in my career. After I transitioned to living as a male in 2001, however, I learned how wrong I was.

I had known for many years that I was transgender. It was a secret I kept for a long time, hiding it from friends, family and co-workers as I tried to cover up my internal struggle. When I finally came out and started living as a man, it was as if a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. After all these years, I was able to truly be myself and to express that self to others.

But it came at great consequence.
