So my license expires in 3 weeks. Iv'e had the same id for the past 4-5 years and had my new name on it, I put M on my old one, but of course it came in the male n they changed it to F. I moved from the midwest to SanFran, and am going to go in soon to get a new one. Do I need anything to show them I want M on it, or just tell them straight up I'm a f2m and on T?

Very good question.  My license gets renewed in July.  I don't know the answer, so I will also be keeping an eye on this post.

Here you are.   Hope this helps.   Covers Birth Cert. and DLs by state.

Gah, thanks for the link, Dev. It's quite confusing, or I'm just slow ??? I had my name changed 9 years ago, and the name on my BC changed as well, and SS. They all still hold the F though.

It is confusing.   Took me a while to figure it out.  Once you see they have it all seperated up by state and then by birth cert. then DMV it makes it a bit easier, but yeah, the site could of been better prepared for people who don't want to spend half a day trying to tell where one state starts and the other ends.

There is a form for the California DMV to do this.  (that's how many people have done it - they have their own form for it).
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

So basically I just need my doc/physician to complete that forum? Or do I need to be in the process of having chest surgery?

This is the form in PDF: http://www.transgenderlawcenter.org/pdf/DL_328.pdf

No surgery of any kind is required in California to change your gender marker on your DL/ID, but you must be transitioning (your therapist must confirm this and sign the form), meaning that you have to be on HRT or living in the male gender role (in your case).

If you don't have a doctor yet, the ones at Lyon-Martin Women's Health Clinic are quite cooperative.  They're on Market near Octavia, 1/2 a block from The LGBT Center.  They're in the book.

Be sure it's filled out correctly.  After it's been submitted you have to wait 60 days to make an inquiry.  See if someone at Transgender Law Center will look at it for you.

I set my drivers license back around a week ago still haven't heard anything.. I sent dvla my old exsisting license paper & card, deed poll (changing my name and title) and my doctors letter stating that I am FTM and that I wish to have everything noted as male.. we shall see when it comes back if it does   :o
