I'm reminded that someone, Einstein perhaps, said something to the effect of the universe not just being stranger than we imagine, its stranger than we can imagine.

Giggle. Thanks for reminding me of that one Tekla, I love that quote to bits. It was Sir Arthur Eddington who said it actually.

Here are my two favourite quotes of his:

QuoteScience is one thing, wisdom is another. Science is an edged tool, with which men play like children, and cut their own fingers.

QuoteWe used to think that if we knew one, we knew two, because one and one are two.
We are finding that we must learn a great deal more about 'and'.

And one especially for you, my dear Alyssa:

QuoteProof is the idol before whom the pure mathematician tortures himself.

Now, Simone, with all that Eddington, you failed to heed the advice of Einstein!

QuoteThe secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.

I'll just gently remind you now that you asked what I thought about interpretations of QM. ;)

Quote from: Nichole on April 14, 2008, 06:58:12 PMMetamagical Themas is another very nice work by the same author and yet another The Mind's I.

Ah, I must get around to reading more Hofstadter. I've wanted to find time for "Le Ton Beau de Marot" for years now.

One reason I liked GEB so much is the way many of the ideas are so non-binary. It definitely resonates with my way of thinking. The mind-body duality is just another construct, albeit a very useful one at times.
All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.

Giggle! I'll remember the wise words of old unca' Albert Alyssa.

And btw, that wasn't a dig ... well, not much of a dig! I just worry sometimes that math becomes the science, rather than a way to describe it, in the process losing much of the wonder and magic inherent to it. ;D

I'm also not 100% happy with the many worlds interpretation. The possibility of alternate realities feels true, but I think we still need to gain a lot more of an understanding before it will be anything more than a *sic* mathematical construct! :P

you are simply 'conscious awareness of being.'

the real you is the observer as opposed to your body or your conditioned ego identity which is purely defensive. ego beliefs control thoughts, emotions, perceptions and reactions. observing them and contemplating their origin allows eventual self-mastery and return to the authentic 'self' to which reality conforms. until then your experience of reality mirrors the contents of consciousness in all its conflictedness.

Tasha has better sense than to divulge her sources!!

Therefore, I agree with her, rather than whomever she might have quoted. ;)  Namaste, sister.

Giggle. Then updated Intellectual Property laws come along and screw both groups. No wonder all the rappers are sampling classical music these days. ;)

Oh don't get me going on the updated intellectual property law, even in a golden age of bad laws over here, it stands out as being really horrible.

Oh I'm sure many have said it.  Hell I think it often just walking down the street of SOMA on a wild night.

I am my thoughts, my mind. Any idea that you are separate from your mind or body is an illusion.
