Is there a guide somewhere on doing this?  As in should I get an attorney or will the do-it-yourself-for $39.95 online suffice? (legal in my state for me).  How long did the process take?  When during (or before) transition did you do it?  Is there a list somewhere of who to notify afterwards so I don' tforget anyone?

I'm still early in transition but these past few days I've cringed every time I heard my given name and the female pronouns.  Legally I can't do anything about my name (today anyway) so I'm trying to plan ahead.  Today I did go into CVS and get a new card in my new  name and I checked the male box.  They didn't need any ID, but when they print out those coupons seeing my old name on it really bothered me.  So that was a start. :)  I also started referring to myself as he out loud, to my dogs (daddy's bad puppies, daddy loves his puppies, etc).

Any help or suggestions regarding name changes appreciated, even if it's to a link I probably haven't found yet.

If I start T in a few months I want to change my name.

Since rules and requirements for this vary from state to state you should check under "name change (state name)" and find out.  In most places it does not require an attorney, just a form and running a legal notice, so the DIY should be enough, and I'm not even sure you need that, a friendly clerk at the courts office should be able to help.
