"I have read Male Femaling: A Grounded Theory Approach to
Cross-Dressing and Sex-Changing by Richard Ekins twice now, the second
time with much less enthusiasm than the first. Published in 1997 it is
an attempt, according to the blurb, to escape clinical models of
transvestism and transsexuality in order to present them as "highly
variable social process[es]". Ekins himself is not transgendered - he
is a Social Psychologist who has been engaging in field work since
1979 (everything from attending drag balls to interviewing thousands
of people) and since 1986 has maintained the Trans-Gender Archive at
the University of Ulster."
