"Gender Identity Disorder is real. Moreover, it's less a neurosis than
a product of organicity. I shall attempt a thumbnail explanation.
Belgium (yest, I know it's a horrible transition but keep reading!)
has an advantage in certain areas of epidemiology--all of it's medical
records are centralized, and most serious or technically difficult
treatments go through a central hospital. I guess that's an advantage
of being a very small country. Their statistical analysis postulate
that one in 35,000 births result in a case of Gender Identity
Disorder. With the fact that they have centralized records, and a
centralized medical facility, they have been able to do more
productive, physical research in this field than anyone else. What
they found is that a part of the hypothalamus tells you what sex you
are--at least what sex you feel yourself to be, is in it's microscopic
structure, appropriate to the other sex."
