ok, the situation, i'm out as ts at work. all the bosses should know to a certain extent what the deal is. a few of them refer to me properly. as i have mentioned before my one boss is gay so it's suppose to be a little easier for him. the problem is where i work my immediate boss tries to avoid using pronouns altogether but then when the guys in the shop use masculine pronouns only talks to them one on one, and i just don't see anything working anywhere in the entire store. if anyone wants to know anything, they go behind my back and talk to my so. i've told a few of the managers that if people wanted to ask questions that they can come and find me and ask questions. i was taught growing up that that was the only way you learned anything: you don't know if you don't ask. and if people can't come and ask me as far as i'm concerned, they don't need to know, and the newer people don't even have to know at all, all they see is female. oh and there's the situation of them changing my name just in the time clock and for paperwork in the department where i work, they say they can't do it. but what i find offensive is the older gentleman i work with, the paperwork when printed his name only appears as J and a number, i really don't believe that they can't fix mine. i'm going to get a corporate address and phone number and see what i can do that way, because i think it's baloney.

i was wondering if the boss needs a letter from me?, so the so-called rumors would quit, i know he definitely needs one from a therapist but it's looking like at least another month before i can get in to see one?
also if i give him a letter what needs to be in it other than the fact i need to be treated and referred by everyone properly?

please help....

Hello there, just me.

Have you looked at the article in our Wiki that covers coming out in the workplace?  It can be read here:

https://www.susans.org/wiki/A_Guide_to_Coming_Out_at_the_Workplace#The_Initial_Contact_Letter

I know that this may not work for everyone and may not be suitable for every workplace but it was the way I came out at work, and it was so successful that I published it in our Wiki.

If you plan to transition fully, I'd sit down with your immediate boss and let him know *exactly* what your plans are. If you seem ambiguous and ambivalent (not saying you are, I don't know your situation), they will too. If you can find a babysitter and get into therapy, a letter from your therapist can carry a lot of weight too, categorizing it as a medical process you're going through.

Quoteoh and there's the situation of them changing my name just in the time clock and for paperwork in the department where i work, they say they can't do it.

If it's not a legal name, they may hesitate for legal or financial reasons. I was able to change my name almost immediately on informal things like emails and the company phone directory, but with paychecks, insurance, etc. I had to wait until it was legal.

I did a formal letter to my boss and followed up with a few books for employers of TS people and information from my theripists.  Most bosses don't have a clue how to deal with it. So going the extra mile and providing enough information can help lots too.  As kate said I did no get my payroll checks, etc changed till I had the legal name change, mainly for social security.

I've been out 14-15 months and life is very good indeed.

Best of luck to you and hang in there.  It really does get easier down the road.
