"Nandini, I learnt, started behaving like a female at the age of five.
When femininity persisted even at 15, the family realised that
something was amiss. Nandini was the youngest child with two older
brothers and a sister, and they worried that her presence at home
would spoil the matrimonial prospects of her siblings. Nandini was
