Victoria's family court has sparked fierce debate by granting a 12 year old girl permission to begin the process of becoming a boy.

Under the court order the child will begin reversible treatment that will suppress puberty.

In a closed court hearing the child's mother said her daughter had always identified as a boy and the child's psychiatrist supports the move saying he holds grave fears for her welfare.
