Gracie Faise

I just came out to a friend at college, and it actually happened spontaneously the way I imagined it would, though it was not planned at all.

We were sitting just outside the school in the sun eating lunch and she saw my ID badge (we are all required to wear them while on campus). Usually I keep it flipped around so you cant see my name and picture but it flipped back and she looked confused.

HER "what the? Why does your ID card say 'Kyle'? Isn't your name Claire?"

ME "Ehhh not legally yet. It'll be legal soon though..."

-snip out convo about strange names-

HER "That's weird. Why'd your parents give you a boy name?"

ME "Well I kinda was a boy at the time, haha."

HER "... Seriously!?"

ME "Yeah~ I'm transsexual"

-snip out lengthy continuation of disbelief-

So yeah she was like, so casual about it and everything. She was very interested but there wasn't an ounce of negativity about it. And you know I think a part of her reaction came to how I went about "coming out" about it. If I was all bashful or timid about it I'm sure the whole situation would of been very awkward, but since I wasn't it was very easy. It was the first time I told someone who didn't know me before and though the happening was small I think it had a big impact on me looking back on it.
I feel very empowered.
