Quotehe Austin Police Department requires cadets to live on the streets, attend gay bars or otherwise immerse themselves in the diverse Austin community before graduating.

The 114th APD Cadet Class completed a three-month cultural immersion program Thursday.

The program requires cadets to interview members of different culture groups and present their findings to their peers. Findings include misperceptions of culture groups and false stereotypes. This year's cadet class studied the homeless, Mexican nationals, African-Americans, Asians and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals.
