Born and raised in the District, SaVanna Wanzer began advocating for transgender equality due to the rejection she faced from her own family.

''When I came out totally as a transgender woman, I was only accepted by a few of my family members who embraced me and loved me and said regardless of what I want to be called or what I want to do, they support me 100 percent,'' says Wanzer. ''But my siblings -- I have nine -- they stopped talking to me.''
