"Most parents of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender children, upon hearing this pronouncement, will experience emotions ranging from anger to sadness, fear to hurt, confusion to grief. For me, growing up in a largely homophobic society, I had acquired many of its homophobic attitudes; however, this view was tempered by my experience as a drunk and an outcast - people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks. So I said to myself, "I guess we're even." But this was not what it was about. My daughter was not looking for judgment or even forgiveness. She wanted something else."
