I started a new job about 4 weeks ago. It was really nerve wracking, because in a couple of months I'm going to be going full time and I'm not looking forward to that conversation. "Yeah, I know I just finished my probationary period, but call me Val now." It is something that needs to be done - I need the job to support the family; I need to transition to survive.
So, first day, human resources presentation. She's telling me how committed the company is to diversity and I'm thinking "We'll see about that" when she drops the bombshell: "We're even working on a policy for transgender."
Now, I know companies don't generally do that sort of thing on their own. Companies generally ignore stuff like that until they have to face it. Which means that someone else has done it. Someone has already transitioned at work. For which I am appreciative and I wish I could give support and thanks. But I have no idea who this person is or even which gender. Or even if they've actually transitioned at work yet.
So, if you're out there, thanks. And if your business just had a balding, pudgy guy start four weeks ago, on a team of 12 or so women, with the window cubicle, go ahead and stop by and say hi.
