Transphobia At Pride

http://www.transatpride.org/TransAtPride/Transphobia.html
7/6/2008

"The Pride march and rally are now over for 2008. A lot of fun was
had by many, but unfortunately transphobia reared its ugly head at
the Pride rally in Trafalgar Square. At about 6:30 in the evening,
Roz Kaveney, long time human rights campaigner, journalist and
transsexual woman, needed to answer that most basic call of nature
and use the loo. What happened next is the sort of thing one is used
to reading about in reports of sexual discrimination cases against
transpeople."

From the London 2008 event...

Bear in mind that England issues ID cards called "Gender Recognition Certificates"  - apparantly originally designed by George Orwell.

And at Burning Words

QuoteIt seems that, according to this lovely person {a steward involved in the incident who posted her side of the story as a comment to a blog}, preventing us from using the ****ing bathroom is our fault, associating our community with sex offenders is "understandable", and crying foul in the face of treatment that would be atrocious at any event, let alone at a queer one, "does us no favours." I say that it does London Pride no favours if these are the sort of volunteers it places in a position of responsibility that involves dealing with members of the trans community.

I think this sort of conduct on the part of an LGBT organisation warrants an international outcry; christ, if it happened to me here, I'd be seeing them again in court.

Stewards for large events are generally provided, in USA, anyhow, by local authorities or are private security people provided by the venue. Their "skills" and discriminatory abilities about what to do or not to do seem hampered often enough.

I'd imagine the same is true in UK.

It's no excuse, especially in the case of the "Liaison Officer" who should have used their authority to sort the mess rather than probably feeling the need to support the stewards, possibly due to their own trans-phobic reactions.

I imagine the LTBG org. was as aghast at the events as we are. But, I suppose they might well have been implicated as well, given the traditional "support" for Ts in the alphabet soup.

But training in issues should definitely be a priority for any service that is going to provide 'security' for LTBG events! The actions of the stewards and the copper were reprehensible.
