Boys won't be boys with new gene

"The discovery of an extra human gene by Australian scientists may stop boys becoming boys.

Researchers at Prince Henry's Institute in Melbourne have discovered an extra copy of the gene, known as DAX1, halts the sexual development of boys in the womb.

Using cells in culture, the researchers found that increasing copies of the gene DAX1 could block the production of a potent male gene called SOX9, responsible for the development of testicles.

"A common requirement for testicle development...is an increase in production of the gene SOX9," head of Human Molecular Genetics Professor Vincent Harley said."
