"Memories of how I was rarely touched or held lovingly as a child, how my toys and clothes were carefully chosen for me, how strongly my older sister's toys, dolls, and clothing were strictly off limits. How highly controlled my entire childhood had been in order to allow me only gender-appropriate behaviors. As each memory crashed through, it was accompanied by the statement I was to hear repeatedly from my Mom over the years whenever she talked about my childhood, "We didn't want you to grow up to be effeminate". The pieces started to fall together faster and faster until I was silently crying."
