QuoteDid someone say "tiresome"? I'm twenty-eight, and the whole "LGBT" amalgamation seems me as an unfortunate and unnecessary historical accident--the product of a confluence of po-mo theory and gay people's internalization of all the bigoted bull->-bleeped-<- they've been fed about gay men being feminine and gay women being butch. It takes me about twelve seconds of honest reflection to conclude that my gayness has nothing whatsoever in common with transgenderness. [...] I fail to see what it is I have in common with the transgendered that requires me to wed my political aspirations to theirs or which justifies conjoining the initials of our respective "communities."

I shouldn't have to add that I appreciate the full human dignity of transgendered people and firmly believe that they should enjoy every appropriate liberty and legal protection, including protection from workplace discrimination. But the idea that I must rally with the transgendered in some kind of band of sexual "transgressives" is one I reject. Transgender issues simply are not my issues, and I respectfully decline to take up the banner.

While we are at it, let's drop the "B," too. The "B" is just silly.

The fact that person calls this a band of sexual transgressive is a
sign of not getting it AT ALL.

Many gays could actually also be transgendered.
There are many many gays and lesbians who are considered T's,
most butch lesbians face the same issues as FTM,
these are seen as icky by many
gays but their discomfort is for them to deal with,
not throw their own flamboyant brothers and sister under the bus.

The Armani wearing, straight looking gays don't really need protection
because its unlikely that they even if outed they'll make the straight
arrow male uncomfortable, its the others that are out and make
others uncomfortable just by the way they are
and ripe for ridicule from the bigots
that truly need help. But, hey, since its not those
SUPER-STRAIGHT-GAYS, let them eat cake...

This is what mary antoinette supposedly said to the starving paris masses
(Let Them eat cake). Nobody knows for sure if she said it, but the
word did spread and this just added to the dislike to the french royals
that led to the revolution (and her beheading).

I agree, Keira. The only time they require protection, apparently, is when the "straight" veneer peels away in a public toilet or on-line with a Congressional page!! :)

As for dropping LTB? I think Jim already has and I'm sure he dropped "fats, femmes and low-wage" way before now!

The full term is LGBTQQI because that includes everybody. To just say "LG" or even just "G" leaves out the other people who are considered "Queer." The group sticks together, and because of the diversity, the long name makes sense. Don't want to say LGBTQQI? Then don't say it. You could say the "Queer" group or the "Gay, Lesbian, Bi, YOU KNOW group." If you're lazy, people will know it. Saying LGBT isn't a problem. It's not any longer than PETA and I don't hear anyone telling PETA to shorten their name.

As for the rest, I'm too dim witted to get what they're trying to say. Sorry about that.

Historians generally agree that what Marie Antoinette actually said was, "Let them eat grass."  In this she was comparing the urban poor to cattle.

I have thought about it, and I think that GLB and T should be allied becasue we are all in gender prison.  In other words, they suffer because it is viewed as inappropriate for persons of their genders to have the sexual appetites that they have, even though it would be appropriate for persons of the opposite genders.  So we do have a common cause.  Tear down the gender prison.

Couldn't have said it better, and I think this also illuminates really well why it's important for feminists and really, all of us, to be allies to LGBTQI people and causes.

Maybe it would be more his issue if he had a gay transbrother, or a a lesbian transsister.
Transgays got the double whammy, and really need affiliation, and the same protections.  HRC already threw the transqueer community under the bus.
Being transsexual is exotic and strange to most people, but a combination of transsexual and homosexual is just too much for so many to 'wrap their minds around', that we are often less than 3rd class citizens.
